ETHNIC minorities in Gloucestershire are six times more likely to suffer from debilitating type 2 diabetes than those of European descent, according to the latest figures.
Diabetes is a significant cause of ill health and disability and is associated with a five-fold increase risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.
People who originate from South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are most at risk ? with people of African and African-Caribbean origin three times more likely to suffer the condition than Europeans.
If left untreated, the condition can lead to long-term damage to nerves, eyes and kidneys.
