Hi

I live in Brighton (UK)

Just got diagnosed type 2

My surgery don't approve of type 2s testing..... is that right? Surely, if I don't know my BG, I will find it hard to control my levels?

Anyway. "Hi"

Hi Petboy, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and also the attitude of your surgery towards testing. Really, they should be providing you with test strips and the education needed in order to use them efficiently and effectively.

Have a read of Diabetes UK's position statement on self-monitoring and see if it might help. In my opinion, motivated and newly-diagnosed people need to be able to monitor and adjust their diet by using a meter so that they know what is suitable for them and what needs to be removed from their diet (or at least, portion size reduced.

If you read Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter these will give you a good understanding of the value of testing. If this doesn't persuade your surgery then perhaps you could self-fund the strips for a while and gather evidence that using the strips is helping you to manage your diabetes and giving you a greater feeling of control.

I'd also recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - an excellent introduction to Type 2 and highly recommended by many of our members 🙂

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have - everyone is very friendly and will try their best to help out! 🙂

Petboy hi and a warm welcome to the forum

Hi Petboy, welcome to the forum, I too think in the early stages it is very worthwhile self testing in a logical way to determine the effect food has on your BS. I got some strips from my GP and bought some myself and have kept a daily diary of all foods and results to show the GP at the appropriate time.

Welcome to the forum! 🙂

Welcome to the forums Petboy 🙂

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I agree testing is the best way to learn what your limits are.

If you can self fund strips for a month or two, and can show your doctor an improvement in your BG (blood glucose) readings (s)he may change their mind and prescribe strips.

There is an article on www.bloodsugar101.com about diabetes on a budget and when to test.

Welcome to the forum. Testing is the only way to learn what are good and bad foods for you at the beginning. I dont test daily now just do a few checks throughout the week if eating something new or not feeling quite right.
