The government has set out an ambitious plan to make England effectively smoke-free in the next few decades.

The new Tobacco Control Plan aims to slash smoking rates from 15.5% to 12% of the population by 2022, paving the way to a smoke-free generation.

If national smoking rates continue to fall, this generation of non-smokers could be achieved by 2030, the charity Action on Smoking says.

Health officials says smoking currently kills 200 people a day in England.

Good news! 🙂

I wonder how they plane to replace the tax revenue ?

I did read the other day that revenues are already significantly down. People will probably live longer too, and claim more pension!

Oh yeah, I'm not going anywhere near health reasons,

They will have to recoup that money somewhere though.

Well, they could do what Scotland is trying to do in the face of enormous opposition from industry. Unit pricing of alcohol.

Advertisers are ready for this- supermarket ads for 12 cans of Stella for £8 from Morrisons carry small print at the bottom "this offer not available in Scotland". That's multipacks sold below cost. Add unit pricing to that, and getting legless will become very expensive. And lucrative for the government.

No smokes, no booze, blimey at this rate I'll have to take up gambling 😎

Now that those who know better can think "job done" they will move onto something else.

Wonder what that will turn out to be ??

As for smoking, somebody having a smoke a few yards from me never bothered me, I have an Ecig and people still frown and do that exaggerated cough as they walk by.

Yes I vape, and the looks you get sitting in a wheelchair doing that are priceless. I've got to shout "it's not the diabetes and it's not the bloody smoking either". Sod 'em.

Fortunately, the government won't put punishing taxes on vaping, because folk will go back to smoking.
