If you would be so kind.

ive been doing really well, I hint, at adjusting to my new state of T2. A couple of days ago I‘d lost a few pounds which took me under the 20 stone marker for the first time since I was quite ill after hernia surgery about 6 years ago. I was so encouraged. I’ve been doing Keto and have a keto breath analyser which tells me I’m in dietary ketosis but im back up over the 20 stone mark again and it’s hard to keep positive. Its 3lbs difference but psychologically huge. On waking this morning BG was 7.1 then before lunch 6.3 and after 6.7. I haven’t had my appointment with GP yet but decided to try a few days without Gliclazide so I’m encouraged by that. Still taking Metformin 500 twice a day. Desperately want to lose weight and was so encouraged by keto. Know I couldn’t cope with fast 800 as I like to walk for about 2hrs most days.
ive been so positive but the scales have chipped away at me.

I’ve given up sugar, flour, booze, potatoes, rice and most fruit tho still enjoying pomegranate seeds, strawberries and blackberries. Feeling a bit defeated after all that effort.

Firstly, hi and welcome, and well done for making the changes! Secondly, 3lb weight fluctuation is something I can easily do in a day - how often do you weigh yourself? Plus it’s been really hot, you might have a bit of fluid retention going on, we retain fluid more easily in hot weather.

Just weigh yourself once a week, same day, same time, and use an app to track your carb and calorie intake - I use My Fitness Pal so I can see what I’ve eaten and match it to any highs or unexpected results.

Thanks Madeline. It’s cheering to feel there’s a community out there. I will try and weigh myself once a week. That sounds sensible. I use Myfitnesspal and it’s great. Being doing Diet Doctor 5 week keto and all the recipes are already there. The recipes are tasty but designed largely for a US audience. I‘ve been choosing other more European recipes for next week and looking forward to them. I was working til very late last night to finish a project and think the tiredness is probably whats got to me. Early night tonight methinks.

DUK is invaluable, so helpful. I’d be stuffed without here tbh. Nice early night and some cooler weather will help!

How long have you been doing the walking? Years ago now I started exercising to lose weight and was discouraged by a quick loss followed by gains in the first 3 weeks. It is true muscle weighs more than fat, then you get good losses as the muscle burns more calories at rest than fat! So keep the good habits they pay off in the long run

Don’t be so hard on yourself. It sounds like you are making lots of good changes which will definitely pay off. As @Madeline says our weight can fluctuate even during the day. We certainly all have things we worry about but just carry on with what you are doing. If you find in a months time it’s not working then you can think about changing things but if you are going low carb and doing exercise you will make good inroads. Take good care. Sue x

Thanks for the encouragement! Just what I needed. I feel better today after a good nights sleep and lots of walking. I've not weighed myself as I'm taking Madeline's advice to only do it once a week. That has helped too!

I've always walked for at least an hour most days a week but more usually more. But I've definitely noticed that since the meds and diet kicked in I've been able to walk at a faster pace and for longer distances which is THRILLING! So it may be that the increases in pace and distance are developing my muscles more.

Susan, you are doing fantastically well in such a short space of time. You really have grasped the concept of what is required incredibly quickly since your diagnosis. Be patient and kind to yourself. Weight loss progress, like BG levels, is not always in one direction, but it is the overall trend which is important. You are doing all the right things and it will pay off in the longer term, so don't be discouraged by a minor blip on your weight loss graph, especially when you have made such brilliant progress with your BG levels. I know it can be a really emotional journey but don't doubt yourself. You are doing great and you will succeed! X

Thank ii. Rebrascora - that helps a lot

Now you are cutting back on the carbs, stores are being opened up - but unpacking them is like opening that wardrobe in the back bedroom where things have been pushed in for years without any sorting out or disposal. There will be a lot going on, but if you are an ordinary type two and you keep to low carb and exercising it will come right.
I found that I had lost weight entirely by accident as I had given up weighing myself - it was just so dispiriting to be on the wrong diet and gaining instead of losing, then I went back to low carb and my trousers were all sliding down. I thought that the elastic must have failed -

@Largesse1! I agree, it so utterly dispiriting and disheartening when the scales fail you. I was very unhappy a few weeks ago because I just plateaued for the first time in months, but a friend pointed out to me that my fat and the scales don't know what a week is, and it will happen in its own good time.

Sometimes I also think that my fat kind of rearranges itself! So although I may not have lost weight, my tummy will seem bit smaller or, more annoyingly, my wrists! I've got all this weight to get rid of, and it goes from the one place which wasn't overweight to start with 🙄

You have done so well, given up so much of your previous diet, and got fit and healthy with walking. You should be soooo proud of yourself, don't stop now x

Thanks so much Vonny, it’s so encouraging to know you’re not the only one.

Hi Largesse, a few years ago my specialist put me on a Trulicity injection which was given once a week it suppresses the appetite and I went from 22 stone down to 15 stone. I hope this helps.
