Caring for her elderly mother, two children, three nephews and nieces took a financial toll on Latoya. One of the children suffered from juvenile diabetes, bringing even greater cost to Latoya’s heavy load.

After losing Medicaid coverage for the children, Latoya found it almost impossible to pay for the insulin her child desperately needed.

The Clarke County Department of Family and Children Services referred Latoya and her family to the Athens Banner-Herald for assistance with the medication costs.

The Empty Stocking Fund provided $263 to Latoya to pay for her child’s insulin and medication.

How can it be that in one of the richest countries in the world a mother has to rely on charity for life-sustaining treatment for her child? :( Fred Banting never wanted insulin to be available only to those who could pay.

It's disgusting isn't it? 😡

How the hell can a country have such a draconian medical aid scheme in this day and age?

WHY had she 'lost' Medicaid?

aren't we lucky to have the NHS, even with its problems!

I often think that people forget how MASSIVE the NHS is. There will always, sadly, be problems, whether it is people not doing their jobs properly or other circumstances, but we have the best national health care system in the world by far! 🙂 It worries me so much that there are people in power who could fundamentally change it, and diminish it in the process :(

Well - you know Coventry? It's a city, and it spreads a bit, it was largely industrial, so we have a fair few people living here. But not THAT big, eh?

Well about 8 years ago when it was still a PCT they said their annual budget was £13 BILLION !!!!
