Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
hello, I’ve been recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

I’m a HGV driver class 1 and currently monitoring my blood sugar levels. I’ve been hitting single fingers 5-9 for the past 28 days with 2 months to go to full-fill the DVLA requirements.

I’m concerned about my employability! has anybody on this forum experienced the same?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

I’m currently furloughed, but work want me to start back ASAP! I have less that 2 years with my employer so have no rights, as diabetes is not covered in the Equality Act 2010, I’m concerned!

Hi

I’m sure others will be along to talk about DVLA and driving to clarify things for you regarding your work driving lorries.

I just wanted to say Diabetes would be covered by Equality Act 2010 - you would be able to ask for reasonable adjustments to help you to continue to work. ACAS is a good website for advice about work related issues.

Hope this helps

MissDaisy 🙂

Welcome to the forum @Rutzsports

Surprised that you have been led to believe that diabetes isn’t covered under the equalities act - because i am absolutely sure it is - this is a topic that comes up fairly frequently.

See this page under ‘your rights at work’

I know the requirements for commercial drivers with T1 are quite a lot more exacting than they are for regular drivers, as they are for commercial airline pilots(!) but the regulations certainly allow for commercial driving licences to be granted to people with diabetes.

Some of the advice tailored for ‘the public‘ sometimes isn’t 100% clear I feel, (eg between what is advice, and what is a legal requirement) so the best bet seems to be to consult the document that should form the basis of advice from your Dr

See chapter 3 p 71 and then a little further on for Group 2 details.

Hope this helps
