Hi all,

quick question. This weekend on Saturday I had a meal planned with my OH since before my diagnosis back in November. Since then I’ve lost about 2.5 stone and my average BG is about 6.5 from all readings.

the meal was like absolute kryptonite for me - all the stuff I haven’t been eating - it was an afternoon tea in a hotel.

anyway, long story short all my numbers are elevated by 1 or 2 - I’m 7.5 instead of <6 ish and even higher 8.5ish after eating.
Has anyone had any experience of numbers taking a while to settle after eating the wrong things? Even after a couple of days?

p.s. I also felt a little sick last night and ended up vomiting - could it be that that’s got my numbers up? I feel absolutely fine right now

Wow well done on your weight loss and great results.
I would suspect the slightly raised numbers are a combination of the food first and now you feel unwell and been sick that would also raise your blood sugars. Hopefully you will soon feel better and back to normal.

thanks so much for the reply - it's the first time in my 3 months I've seen the numbers going the 'wrong way' and I'm getting a little twitchy!

Yes I think it’s quite possibly connected to the sickness. Hope it doesn’t end up being a full-on bug.

For saying you’ve had a ’treat’ meal, the rises you’ve seen look quite modest to my T1 eyes

congratulations on the great weight loss too!

Congratulations on the great weight loss. Amazing.
I had a wobbly reading day a few weeks ago where I got the lowest ever reading followed by the highest, a usual breakfast which spiked me more than 4mmol + and a total change from avg of 5.4 (4.7-6)... So I panicked.... Have no idea how long it lasted as didn't test the next few days.
The common factor was cake, birthday cake. I only had a slither but...
For 3 months have not had ingredients like these. It will possibly be the same for you. So the body reacted.
The other week I had a pancake & felt so sick and I am sure that was the plain flour. I went to bed stomach hurt so much. I think once we start a crusade to put the right things in, once we have a treat/deviate our body reacts almost like we have poisoned it.
Hope it all settles & you feel better.

^ I had lots of helpful advice.

Thanks for your kind replies. I’ve tested a more reasonable 6.5 in wake this morning. Still a shade higher for me, but getting there.
I’m pleased to say I don’t appear to have come down with any sickness, but the night I was ill I got no sleep - so maybe that contributed to it as well.

will do another test soon to see what my post breakfast levels are. Thanks all

I personally find that if I sleep badly I can have higher levels.

the sleep seems to be affecting me. My levels are still a bit higher than I've seen - but I guess stressing about them is counterproductive. Just notched a 7.5 before lunch

Your body might well have been reacting to a 'non food' ingredient in the meal - I sued to work for Allied Lyons and their attitude to what to put into a mix was not what one could wish for.
I can't imagine it has got any better in the industry as a whole, since I left it. If you have been eating well for some time then going back not just to starch and sugar, but industrially sourced foods could be part of the problem.
I found that it took about three days for high starch foods in particular to stop having an influence, though the following day was the most elevated period. I think it just fills up our limited storage and it takes time for it to drain out again.

I’m starting to chill about it now. I’m only three months into the rest of my life, and observing how things affect levels is certainly an education. On average, they appear to be creeping back down, I guess time will tell.

tell you what though one meal/day isn’t worth this.

Is a few days higher likely to have an effect on HBA1c you think?

I don't think you are going to see a great leap in your Hba1c from the effect of just one meal - it is supposed to be an average after all - you'd probably need to be doing it every weekend to see much of a change.
It is all part of learning just what to do for the best.

Levels back up again. I think it’s stress related. It’s been a difficult week with work what with COVID-19 preparation, and it’s never really left my thoughts either.

just need to chill
