Hi everyone. I've been given a bottle of elderflower presse. Looks a delicious and very chilled bottle but i'm wondering...can T1 drink this? The only think i can find online is a disclaimer saying it drops sugar levela and could cause hypos but i would have thought it would be full of sugar. Do you drink it alone or with a mixer?

Does it not have nutrition information on the bottle? It should do, even if it did have carbs you could still drink it and bolus for it but if it doesn't have the info available then personally I'd give it a miss xx

I have no other answer about this particular bottle @freesia, but the first, late, Mr Marten used to make his own wine from elderflowers. I have to admit that it was pretty awful. Elderflower smells like cat wee to me...

It says 100ml is 10.6g carbs of which 10.5g sugars. Its just confused me when i read online if you take medication for diabetes you are at risk of hypos with elderflower. Seems at odds with whats on the bottle. Might give it a miss, be on the safe side

I don't drink anything with carbs in anyway so I'd be passing on it, hell I've been on water and coffee for over 3 years, just treated myself last week to a bottle of blackberry & blueberry diluting that I'll eventually get to try when Bruce can bring it up when he doesn't have other things to bring, this him only being able to use 1 hand/arm is frustrating! lol xx

I used to make my own elderflower cordial, and I never noticed any glucose lowering effects from the elder flowers, just the glucose raising ones from the sugar!

That settles it then, definitely staying away from it. I think i was attracted to the thought of something different to coffee, tea, water and the weekend glass of wine.
@Kaylz i read what happened to Bruce. Hope he's able to use it more soon and you get your blackberry and blueberry.
@Robin you were adventurous making your own, i think the piece online was probably a disclaimer.
I'll see if my OH wants it. If not, i'll pass it to a friend

The most adventurous part was buying the citric acid for it, I discovered loads of places don’t sell it because it’s used to mix with drugs! Luckily, our local pharmacy sold it, being in a rural area and used to people needing it for preserving!

!!! Definitely adventurous. I'd have worried what people thought of me buying it . Before i was diagnosed i used to make a lemon cake with lemon and elderflower drizzle. I think remembering the taste of that has had me wondering about the drink.

I love the taste of Elderflower. I haven’t found any blood glucose lowering effects from drinking elderflower presse @freesia From what I understand, the warning about elderflower was for those taking larger amounts as a herbal remedy not for those having normal small amounts in food and drink.

Chill it and try some *drool*

Edited to add that if I’m drinking a reasonable amount and not about to exercise, etc, I bolus for it as I would any other soft drink because of the sugar.

thanks my lovely, all going well the stitches come out on Friday, he still won't be able to use it though, the surgeon told him he wouldn't be lifting anything heavier than a glass of water with it for at least 6 weeks, today he brought a bottle of juice for himself, a bottle of juice for my mum, box of cat food for his cat and 2 packs of caramel cake bars for me, will try one tomorrow as a wee treat as almost 4 years since I last had anything like that, really trying to use this situation to try and beat my eating disorder once and for all, wish me luck! lol xx

All the luck in the world and enjoy your caramel cake bar. Are you getting any support from anyone with your eating disorder?
A treat every so often makes things feel better. My treat is Aldi Moser Roth 85% chocolate, a bar is 4g carbs and a glass of wine.

No, I was on the waiting list for a year to see someone but the facilities near me closed down and when I finally got seen I couldn't make the 6 hour round trip every fortnights for sessions, I have 3 bars of the Moser Roth per week so know that chocolate all too well lol, I don't drink at all, haven't in over 3 years xx

6 hour round trip is shocking! So is being on a waiting list for a year. Enjoy your cake bar x

If you fancy the idea @freesia, I would give it a go and see a) if you like it, and b) whether it affects your BG much 🙂

I'm a bit wary after today's bs levels. High 9s to 11 all day . Corrections not really making much difference so i'm assuming its the heat. Might hang on to the bottle a bit longer, until levels are more stable.

Tell you what - Tesco's carbonated water at first used to do a lemon and elderflower flavour one which was utterly delicious and on a hot day fantastically thirst quenching. Artificially sweetened though. Hence I'd dilute the cordial with carbonated water and add ice and a slice - like you were making a G&T. The lemon and the unflavoured fizzy water should counteract the sugar in the presse rather well I should think.

I like drinking Elderflower presse: as Jamie Oliver said it can be boring on its own but, gives whatever you mix it with an extra oomph in flavour. Bottlegreen do some pretty interesting mixes both in cordials or presse’s: also, the newest being light infusions with less sugar in spring water but, no sweetners; always read labels & check for those as I don’t want to take sweeteners! Belvoir farms also do it in cordials or presses’s. I always bolus for it & never noticed any blood sugar lowering.

I noted the Belvoir Farms one uses sparkling spring water when I was Googling it yesterday. I don't drink gallons of anything so when I have artificial sweeteners (the modern ones) I've not so far noticed anything untoward.
