Hi all!

I feel like I've got the diet reasonably well sorted now and I'm only testing first thing in the morning, mostly. I had a blip for a few weeks with one virus, then another, and my morning test went up to 5.1 but it's mostly 4.7 and under which I think is OK. I've lost half a stone since I started on low GI which surely has to help. I didn't even realise I had any weight to lose!

The problem isn't even eating out with the family now. I know I'm OK with most salads (just don't eat the ciabbatta) or meat and two veg without the chips.

But I've got a "drinks and snacks" evening coming up with my French group and I feel really uncertain what to do. It's pretty likely the snacks will all be carb-based because everything always is! And I'm not drinking alcohol until I get back some better blood results for my liver, so all I'm drinking is diet tonic water (or diet lemonade if that's on offer).

Maybe they'll let me bring stuff along. I just don't know how these things go; and the French teacher is slightly intimidating.

Any thoughts?

Why don't you have something to eat before you go and then you can just have a very small amount of the lowest carb stuff there. This way you won't appear rude by not eating anything but won't be eating loads of high carb stuff. There are bound to be 'diet' soft drinks there or just have water.

I'd ask a fellow student about what has been agreed. Or raise the issue in class. In my experience of evening classes (genetics & pharmacology, in case you were wondering), on the last session of each term, teacher and students alike brought snacks to share with coffee.
In fact, I may have a similar issue coming up in December, as I'm doing an Arabic evening class. I doubt there will be any alcohol as all other students are Moslem, although not all use break time to pray, so I'm not sure how observant. Knowing origins of teacher and some fellow students, I'm hoping there will be Pakistani / Iranian snacks. I'll probably take something Scottish eg shortbread, as that's something I can make reliably!

If it were you and there are going with French foosd, maybe there will be cheeses and pickles...

Good point. I can eat cheese!

That's an excellent idea. If there is cheese I can just nibble a bit of that, and have water if there's nothing diet available.

I'm just so not used to this yet. Previously if I wasn't drinking I'd have been heavily into the orange juice!

It's a funny old group. It's University of the Third Age, so we're all in our sixties and above, but we do everything Peter's way because we really need him: he's the only native French speaker among us! And there are only around six of us at any time. The evening do will include partners though, so I doubt much French will be spoken. I'm only going because one of the other students is a neighbour and it's a chance for Neil (my husband) and me to socialise with him and his wife.

But I'm sure there will be the chance to ask what we can bring to add to the festivities. I hope they'll let me bring cheese!

Etiquette says it's perfectly acceptable to eat something before going to a dinner party (saves you banging on the tables and asking "Where's the Food?" cause you haven't eaten for 10 hours and are having to wait). You just don't mention it, certainly not "I've just this really nice...!"

:D

I usually eat things like chicken, salad, cheese etc if there are buffets and leave everything else. I have been to two recently and that is all I had. Most people only have small amounts of salad so I just have loads of that.

Are you still classed as pre-diabetic? 5.1 and 4.7 does not sound pre-diabetic to me although 42 hba1c is. I suppose it depends on what the hba1c is these days.

I've got an appointment to get my Hba1C done in a couple of weeks; I had some liver results that weren't quite right and I've asked them to do my BG as well. I hope they do!

I did radically change my diet as soon as I was told I had a problem so I think previously my BG results would have been much higher.
