Hi, i was diagnosed type1end of June this year. Im away for a few days and likely to be having pub meals instead of cooking for myself. Just after some tips on how people manage eating at different times and when going out. Normally pre evening meal i’ll be mid to low 4’s take my insulin and eat about 30-60 mins later which seems to work for me increasing my BG to 7-8mmol 30-90 mins later then settling in about 6mol for the rest of the evening. However I’m now below 5mmol which means i cant drive to the pub and im wondering whether to have a couple of jelly babies which increase me about 1.5mmol for an hour or have 10g slow acting carbs without insulin- or just have some insulin and a bit more carb until i eat ‘properly’ at the pub. Or indeed does it really matter?! Just looking for the healthiest way to manage the run up to eating out! Thank you for any advice. andy

Well if you need to drive you need some carbs without insulin to push you up a bit to make you safe to drive, i’d go for the fast acting ones if that will keep you up long enough. If you don’t need to drive then I wouldn’t worry about it, just keep an eye on things and take fast acting carbs if you start to dip a bit too low. It’s a good idea not to inject for your pub meal until it arrives in front of you so that you can see the size of the portion and work out the carbs and how much you think you will eat of it. Don’t worry too much if your BG’s aren’t ideal afterwards, it’s all a learning curve and for a few days it won’t matter if they are less than perfect, you are allowed a treat sometimes, enjoy yourself!
