I prefer my homemade soups with substance too. I make a mixed veg one that I just put in a saucepan and bring to the boil and then leave to simmer for about an hour, no fuss. My type of cooking.I have looked at soup makers and they are not suitable for me, because they blend the hell out of the soup making it a fairly disgusting to me unknown mix

You can skip this if you use a pressure cooker. The important thing is to boil them for at least 10 minutes. I survived my student days as a vegetarian without soaking pulses!yeah but you must soak beans and chickpeas
