The rise in popularity of e-cigarettes in the UK may have resulted in more successful attempts to quit smoking, according to UK researchers.

The British Medical Journal work looked at trends in quit rates and support in England from 2006 to 2015.

E-cigarettes seem to have had no effect on the number of people trying to quit, but more have actually managed to stop.

The authors say vaping may have helped about 18,000 extra people in England successfully give up smoking in 2015.

The team, from University College London and Cancer Research UK, say theirs is an observational study, and therefore cannot prove direct cause and effect.

One smoking expert said it appeared e-cigarettes were a "major contributor" to the trend.

I have no experience of these, but my feelings, as an ex-smoker, are mixed. I know that when I stopped no form of nicotine-replacement therapy helped (patches and gum), they just kept me addicted to nicotine. I know these are less harmful and less anti-social, but it strikes me they keep you addicted to the habit and the nicotine. Presumably the government get no tax from them?

Vaping does allow slow withdrawal. The liquid used comes in different strengths, so you can gradually reduce the amount of nicotine all the way down to zero. That's if you want to, of course.

The government have no chance of applying a tax, because the manufacturers will just say this is a nicotine withdrawal treatment, like Nicorette.

I have been vaping since diagnosis, down to 3mg strength and slowly moving to zero.

Me too Owen. I now buy nicotine PG liquid and mix it with VG (vegetable glycerine) to make my own juice. By using the same amount of PG, but increasing the amount of VG I add...I can gradually reduce the nicotine level. For flavour I use menthol crystals (the type used in minty foods and toothpaste)...as I used to smoke a menthol brand. The crystals need a quick blast in the microwave to dissolve them. For about £34 I have sufficient liquid to last me about a year. Vive le vaping!

I suppose it's a personal thing. I found when using the patches (over 20 years ago!) that when I reduced the strength of the patches I just started supplementing them with cigarettes! 😱 Cold turkey for me, made much easier after reading the excellent 'Easy Way to Stop Smoking' by Allen Carr 🙂

It is going to be hard to buy the nicotine soon. Just bought a litre. Should last about two years, then I will hopefully quit all together.

That's my aim too...I got 1l of the PG with nicotine and 2l of VG. We have a plan...so we'll get there eventually.

Just got some new flavours, strawberry milkshake and banoffee pie, both really nice and feels like I am being naughty with sugar
