MPs are to carry out an inquiry into e-cigarettes amid concerns there are "significant gaps" in what is known about them and how they are regulated.

The science and technology committee will look at their effectiveness as a stop-smoking tool and the impact of their growing use on health.

Nearly three million people in the UK now "vape" regularly - four times more than in 2012.

But committee chair Norman Lamb said there was mixed messaging on vaping.

The Liberal Democrat MP said: "They are seen by some as valuable tools that will reduce the number of people smoking 'conventional' cigarettes, and seen by others as 're-normalising' smoking for the younger generation.

My guess is that they are aiming to tax vaping fluid like cigarettes. There is no doubt, in my own experience, that vaping is less health damaging than smoking. I accept there’s no evidence of long term effects, because it’s not been around long enough.

I’m glad to see this because something tells me this alternative will come back to bite us in the future (though I fully accept they’re a much safer alternative to nicotine and actual smoking). I do wish public places would ban them like ordinary cigarettes though because the plumes of ‘stuff’ emanating from them is disgusting.
I was watching something on tv last night where a couple of young guys said they’d hadn’t been smokers but took up vaping because it’s ‘safe’ 🙄

Actually, it’s that group of people- those who have never smoked - who will provide the best health data. Anyone who has smoked for years in the past is at risk of lung cancer.

Agree with that. I'd rather not be stood there with someone blowing a sickly strawberry smelling vapour at me. There has to be some sort of addictive quality to it as these people go around clutching these devices like their lives depend on it. With normal cigarettes being so regulated and expensive they had to make the effort to go and use them. With these vaping devices although there are supposed to be restrictions it seems to be all the time, anywhere and everywhere. I was in Aldi the other week and a woman was using one in the shop whilst looking at items on shelves and probably didn't even realise she was doing it. 🙄

I can’t stand these fruit flavours. I think they ought to be banned, they attract kids.

In my youth, menthol fags were for wimps. JPS in the shiny black box were the thing, No6 for the cheapskates.🙄

I had an older lady pass me puffing on one in Marks and Spencer clothing department, which at the time surprised me, as you would not smoke ordinary ones in a store.

Remember Sobranie, the coloured ones? Gitanes? Gaulois? Camel? All much cooler than your bod standard Embassy or No.6. Actually, I brought a load of cigs back from my trips to Russia in the late '70s. They were astonishingly cheap, especially with foreign currency. A brand called 'Zolotoye Runoh' (Golden Fleece) were 'aromatic', in the way that old socks are aromatic 😱 Also, papirosi, which were traditional Russian cigs that looked suspiciously like joints (but weren't!) They had a long cardboard tube instead of a filter and you had to pinch it two ways - they were the cheapest of the lot.

In my experience no way could I have quit without them. I feel 1000% better and I still vape but zero Nic now.
I smoked very heavily for 50 yearsor so.
I would recommend them to anyone who wants to quit

Of course. At uni I only smoked Gitanes or Disque Bleu in the soft packs. Black Balkan Sobranie were de rigeur for the balls, to go with the rented dinner suit.:D

I too suspect this is the Governments way of recouping lost tax revenue from those who have switched from cigarettes to vaping.

Presumably the government now won't need as much tax revenue to treat all the cancers, lung diseases, heart disease, etc what with all these smokers giving up.

Gitanes pour moi aussi. I also used to get Ducados from Spain. cheap but dog rough. Personal fav was the Gauloise rolling baccy. Used to stock up on that when I was abroad with the band.
