E-cigarettes can be key weapon against smoking, say MPs

Rules around e-cigarettes should be relaxed so they can be more widely used and accepted in society, says a report by a committee of MPs.

Vaping is much less harmful than normal cigarettes and e-cigarettes should be made available on prescription to help more people quit smoking, it said.

The report also calls on the government to consider their use in public places.

There is no evidence e-cigarettes are a gateway into smoking for young people, Public Health England said.

Great, vaping rooms in pubs, perhaps?

Mind you, the nearest drinking establishment to me is (I kid you not) the Whalley Brass Band and Social Club. Defiantly Northern:D

I don't agree as a non smoker I object to breathing other people's smoke

I hope they keep vaping out of public places. I accept the risks of passive vape inhaling are minuscule compared to cigarettes/nicotine but frankly, I don’t want to have to peer through the midst of moist vanilla and cinnamon. It’s like sitting next to a fresh air spray jammed on! 🙄

Sorry but as a person who has never smoked and has asthma, if I walk into a pub and see anybody smoking anything then I'm probably going to walk straight back out again. It's all very well people going on that those who want to smoke should be allowed to, and maybe vaping is less harmful than tobacco, but what about the rights of those of us who would like to breathe clean air?
(Or as clean as you can possibly get, anyway)

That is why I said vaping rooms in pubs. One room. And I’ve said this before, and keep saying it, the vapour is not smoke. It is what it says. The air in the street outside is probably more dangerous.

It’s also worth remembering that you go into a pub for one reason. It’s to imbibe your drug of choice, alcohol, a nervous system depressant. Some folks drug of choice is Nicotine, a nervous system stimulant. Some folk like cannabis. Let’s not get snotty about other people’s choices, let he without sin throw the first stone.

Alcohol disinhibits violence, cannabis doesn’t. I think alcohol should be banned in pubs for that reason.

I was in a pub yesterday, but not to drink alcohol 😉 Must admit, harmless or not, I'm not keen on inhaling the vapour, I once stood next to someone at a bus stop who was vaping and it made me feel queasy (smelt like caramel, and quite sickly).

We go to pubs for meals in the main as I never drink alcohol during the day. I’m certainly not being judgemental about choices people make but let’s remember smoking is an addiction not a social right.
I’m still not convinced that in years to come they won’t be health repercussions about vaping but passive smoking has probably already done its damage to me anyway.

Well said and totally agree. Nothing against people vaping in their own spaces, but not where I have to breathe it.

Actually I don't drink much any more, and when I do I'd rather do it at home. And if I do choose to have an alcoholic drink when I'm out, I don't force everyone around me to share it whether they want to or not.

Oh yes when I was young and didn't have responsibilities I did get drunk a few times, not very often though and I eventually grew up and realised that it wasn't clever. We all make mistakes! And as grannylorraine says, I don't object to people smoking or vaping as long as they don't do it next to me! There should be some pubs where smokers/vapers can go and some where they can't, so that people can choose which they prefer.

Couldn’t agree more Sally, and I’m sure landlords would be happy.

As folk have mentioned going out for a drink-

Recorded crimes as a result of the effects of smoking or vaping : 0
Recorded crimes as result of drinking alcohol: around 70% of all recorded crime.

Why, as a society, do we happily tolerate this?
