Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all,

Been contemplating for a long time whether to post on here or not, but after getting nowhere by myself I thought I would ask on here.

I have roughly been type 1 for 9 years or so, for the first 6 years I would say my control was poor, rarely tested, but I always injected when I should, e.g. after eating and before bed (long lasting), anyways I had DKA for the first time about 3 years ago, this really knocked me into shape and since then I have started looking after myself a lot better, regular testing etc.

However like anyone I constantly have mood swings about being positive about having diabetes and then get in a bit of a slump.

Prior to me having DKA I did notice that getting erections wasn't happening naturally, or if it was then it was a lot less than previously, I also was not ejaculating - this has pretty much carried on to present day (e.g. three years).

So over the last few years I was seeing my consultant every 6 months etc and he simply said if you manage your blood sugar it can come back naturally, so I really tried my best to get my levels down, I think I got it down to 7.9 which for me is fantastic and has really reduced in such a short space of time - but nothing changed, he referred me to a 'specialist', who I pretty much had to wait 8 months to get an appointment - so when I finally went to see him I was very optimistic and looking forward to it.

However I couldn't be more wrong, he basically repeated what my consultant said, gave me no advice or what options I had, said it may come back it may not. So I walked out of the consultation very down and upset.

Since then I saw a psychologist as it was having a big effect on my life and also others around me as I was feeling very low etc, I felt although I was doing everything I could to help fix myself and also try to stay positive but get nothing back.

I have tried a type of Viagra (the most common one I forget the name), it works seldomly, but I cannot maintain an erection for penetration, also the next day I feel very groggy once I have used them and also the ejaculation has never happened since about three years ago - retrograde ejaculation, which has quite a negative effect on my moods and my mindset, it effects everything such as my confidence and general happiness as it's always on my mind.

I'm still 'fairly' young in my early 30s, however I managed to come out of the rut I was in before after seeing the psychologist and getting on with life, however I am starting to get back into that way of thinking now (eg not caring as much and getting down about it) which I why I have come from advice for any of you that have been in a similar position.

Is there anything I can do, e.g. see somebody different at the hospital? Take different tablets or try something else to maintain erections/reverse/help the retrograde ejaculation?

I have recently moved, therefore getting set up at Dr's and seeing diabetes professionals at the hospital has been a right pain, I feel at least as I am seeing new consultants and nurses then hopefully I can start from scratch and get the help I need?

Any help is greatly appreciated - I know it's not the easiest thing to talk about on an open forum (hence why I haven't posted before), so feel free to send me a direct message rather than on here if you have any advice.

Many thanks

As a woman am sorry not to be of any use, but I wanted to say I am so glad you posted this. We need to talk about this and you will be helping others by being open. I hope you get some answers, either on here or with new health care team

Many men are in this position, whether from diabetes, prostate cancer treatment or something else causing nerve damage - eg lower back whiplash injury.

As a couple, we're affected by it. There are solutions other than Viagra. There is another tablet -Cialis - along the same lines; there's a jab men can do into the penis; there are vacuum pumps; there is an operation you can have where a tube is fitted in the penis, and the pump is inserted in the scrotum.

ISTR more is openly publicised regarding this on the Prostate UK website than any other health websites - though not all that many people including doctors and nurses are dead comfortable having a down to earth conversation about it.

It shocked me, this cageyness, same as I'm deeply shocked that a lot of women don't get cervical screening done because they're scared what the doc/nurse will think of their body and or their underwear. Whaaaaaat?

DO let's talk about it openly with no embarrassment!
