Had my fortnightly job centre appointment, me and my advisor get on pretty well and she asked how I was doing in general so I was honest and said not too great and explained how I was waiting to see a psychologist now this is where she informed me that they actually have a psychologist available within the DWP and she said that IF my appointment with one was likely to take long I could ask to speak with theirs, I didn't know they even had an option like that available! I did tell her that I had an appointment with my consultant next week and was hoping he could get it pushed through but was just wondering if its something I should consider or should I stick with it all going on in the same place x

Go for it, take what you can get - at the very least the DWP one can be an interim until you see the "official" diabetes-related one. Some help is better than no help! xxxx

But on the other hand if I go and see the DWP one it may affect getting the appointment with the diabetes related one as I would already be under the care of someone else, I may have to wait longer or I may not be seen at all xxxx

@Kaylz from my experience of psychology when I needed help for diabulimia I would hold on for specific diabetes related help before doing anything else. I had help from an eating disorders psychologist as I had anorexia but the part I really needed help with was using insulin in the correct way. Diabetes psychology is pretty niche and in order to start to feel a bit better about things re food/ insulin etc I would say you really do need specific, targeted help.

I presume the DWP psychologist would be there to help you progress towards getting employment and whilst that may include addressing any needs you might have for your diabetes I would wait for the specialist help and then progress to a more general DWP psychologist if you felt that you needed to. Diabetes issues need understanding from someone who really knows diabetes and has tried and tested ways to help you out.

That's just my own opinion from the experience I have had over the years .I wish you the very best of luck 🙂

Thank you for that hun 🙂 although you didn't need to go into so much detail unless you felt comfortable enough to so a MASSIVE thank you for that also as it has greatly helped me make my mind up in waiting too see the right person and much appreciated 🙂 xx

A risk of which to be aware, is that refusing offer of DWP psychology help might count againist you in work search behaviour. However, arguing that you are waiting for specific diabetes / eating disorder help is completely reasonable. I suggest documenting all contact - letters, phonecalls, emails etc - regarding referral, appointments etc, toreduceriskof being sanctioned.

I was given it as an option to consider not actually offered to see them, however if I want to I just have to let my advisor know so at the moment it currently doesn't effect my claim etc but thanks for that x
