Hi. Could anyone help please. My husband is insulin controlled and we are just about to renew his driving licence. He drives at work a vehicle that carries 8 passengers himself being the driver (9th). Is this classed as a minibus and does he really need to fill in the form D2. Very confusing as diff people say different things about yes it is a minibus and no it isn't as there are only 8 passengers. Doing our heads in. Is anyone in the same position as we get so confused with the dvla and their "speak talk". Many thanks. Norma and Rob 😡

I'm not sure but I have a query on weight limits so I was planning on conatacting diabetes uk as they should be able to answer my query and I would imagine yours too, good luck

Thanks Medusa for the fast reply. We will try them tomorrow as you suggest. Thanks again and good luck with your enquiry too.

8 passengers plus the driver counts as a people carrier. I also drive these sometimes at work. I am T1 using a pump. We have to do MiDAS (minibus driver awareness scheme) training and I completed my refresher last week so know this info is up to date.
Good luck - I always find it stressful at licence renewal time. 🙂

Welcome to the forum, Norma and Rob.

The link given by Pumper Sue is the one to use - UK government official view, and there are so many permutations of how many seats, when licence was gained, age of driver, whether being paid or not and so on, that it's important to be accurate and legal, otherwise insurance becomes invalid, which is another offence. It's a good plan to phone Diabetes UK careline tomorrow, so that an advisor can go through the forms with you. Be very careful that you don't tick the wrong box, as forms are machine read - a faint pencil mark first, then ink, then wait for ink to dry, then rub out pencil if it's not in the same box as pen is a good strategy.

It sounds like Rob may have started using insulin since last renewal, so also worth checking that employer's insurance and personal insurance have been informed, too. As Maryanne points out, many employers also need drivers to do awareness courses; the same also applies to many unpaid volunteers.

Many many thanks for some very helpful replies. Rob has been iddm for over 18 years and has never had so many forms to fill in ever before which is worrying us as it is a must to be legal isn't it. Will look at the link given and will def ring diabetes UK tomorrow. Thank you once again to all of you for your helpfulness and welcomes we appreciate you all. Norma

Norma please also be very careful how the hypo question is answered.
Also look in the driving section of the forum where there's a link to a booklet which helps in filling in the form.
I can not empathise how important it to read it and make sure you are not misled by the hypo question. If that's answered wrong it's an automatic loss of the licence.

Sorted

We have rang up the medical team at DVLA and they say the law is my husband can drive the transport at his workplace on an ordinary car licence. He can drive with 8 passengers as long as the weight is not over 3.5 ton which is a great relief. Once again we have appreciated your help and yes will be very careful re the hypo question so thank you. Regards. Norma 🙂
