DUK produces guide for journalists

With luck we will get accurate reporting in future

Perhaps expecting a bit much of journalists to read a 9 page document, but at least DUK can draw it to attention of those who publish erroneous material.

Hopefully will help the journalists get their facts correct but I personally doubt it...

You'll still get them saying insulin solves low blood sugar though....

I did'nt have to read to far on this report to discover that the comments are the same as the reports from the press that you all complain about. It always appears to me that the only reason some type 1 want to be portraid as different, is they don't want to be grouped with people that are so say fat.
This report by DUK is c**p, it says what some want to hear. Type 1 has no option and needs insulin, then goes on to say majority of type 2 is the result of being overweight (obese) and is treated by diet and sometimes medication and eventually going on to insulin. Even the Sky reporter in the introduction letter says that the general puplic including type 2 do not understand the difference. Well I have some news for DUK if they want the facts put out correctly. I am type 2 I was not overweight when diagnosed, my weight has been gained in the years since diagnosis, also I was put on insulin ( the same as type 1) from the first day of being diagnosed, and not as stated in the report as eventually. I have no faith in DUK that is why I do not support them.

These are my views and mine alone which I think I'm entitled to as are all members.

You most certainly are John. Personally I don't think anyone should be tarred with the 'you got it because you're fat' accusation.

Couldn't agree more John.

It could be said that the report is another sloppy piece of journalism.

Have they ever done a bit of research to determine how many T2's were overweight when they got it and how many weren't?

I'd love to do that and prove em wrong, that MOST people weren't.

Sadly however - I wouldn't put money on it.

It is estimated that 20% of Type2s are normal weight at diagnosis. It is also possible to be diagnosed with diabetes after long term use of medications for other health problems including steroids, anti-depressants, BP medications and even statins have been implicated.

Here is some sloppy journalism from the author of the forward of the report.

I especially enjoyed reading:
NOTHING winds me up more than diabetics moaning on about ill health. Whether they have to take injections or infusions of insulin or have the more common type that is linked to age and being overweight, they should stop whingeing and start taking some responsibility.
🙄
States the man on an insulin pump.
Perhaps Mr Dixon would like to tell us Type 2's how we are supposed to control our blood sugars without test strips?
Perhaps more to the point, perhaps DUK want to chose a figurehead for this pamphlet more carefully, rather than plumping for Mr Smug.

Very happy to see they've made the effort. Do hope the media uses it.

I seem to remember reading on this very forum a convincing argument that (in many cases if not all) type 2 causes obesity, not the other way around.

I was just about to say the same thing. Type 2 causes the obesity. Obviously I have no evidence...

How about this one Robert?

"You did NOT eat your way to diabetes"
http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14046739.php

I was also disappointed by the being overweight 'causes' T2 nonsense. Risk factor YES... cause? Not so sure IMO... That's not to say of course that weight loss is not a laudable aim for many T2s, just that as with so many things about diabetes it's not quite so simple as it first appears.

As I've said before, saying obesity is the cause of T2 because the two conditions seem to be related is a bit like saying tyre marks cause car crashes.

How about car crashes cause tyre marks, cos quite often T2 causes weight gain due to feelings of starvation and over eating because of the fact that the cells can't absorb the glucose.

There has been plenty of evidence that you don't have to look overweight to be at risk of type 2 diabetes. It seems that if you have lots of fat surrounding the internal organs that may be one deciding factor.

However, it is more common that if you have lots of fat around the internal organs then you will be as likely to look overweight too. So it is not unreasonable to raise obesity as a cause/risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

As pattidevans says, it is also possible that further weight may pile on once the diabetic symptoms kick in (I think when insulin levels become high). But it is also possible to lose weight when severely insulin resistant. In my case I lost a stone before I was diagnosed.

It also isn't a coincidence that once I lost weight (and the internal visceral fat) my diabetic symptoms were greatly improved.

Andy 🙂
