Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I contacted the DVLA as I was told to do by GP as a new diabetic
got a letter back saying I need a medical license
what does this mean ??
my blood is running and 6.9 -7.9 over the last 40 days
don't know how I been assessed on this as saying I can't drive till I get my license ??

I was diagnosed Type 2 four years ago and never received any information, far less any instruction about a medical license for Diabetes. What did DVLA say?

A quick Google suggests that type 2 on insulin and/or a license for driving a bus or lorry may require a special license.

You only need to inform DVLA if you are on medication which can cause your BG to go too low ie Gliclazide or insulin. If you are not on these then there is no requirement to inform them. At least that is my understanding. Diabetes itself does not make you any more of a risk on the road than anyone else. It is the medication which potentially causes a risk and hence you have to inform DVLA and your insurance company.

It’s always worth telling your insurance company even if you don’t have to inform the DVLA in my opinion. That way if you were unfortunate enough to have an accident, they can’t say they didn’t have the full information about you.

What medication are you on and do you have any other medical conditions? Also what licence are you talking about is it just car or are you talking about HGV? I ask because are different for HGV/bus licence etc.
