3.9 New EU Rules

Driving licenses shall not be issued to, nor renewed for, applicants or drivers
who have impaired awareness of hypoglycemia. In practice, this will prevent some applicants and existing drivers from holding a license.

That might upset some people, that to me says if you have had unawareness but now have returned symptoms, your not getting your license back....?? Maybe its not that clear....

I think that what they are saying is that you can get your license back after you awareness returns but I was a bit confused by the technical language of the report - hopefully someone else can check that I have understood that correctly

Actually that is even more confusing after reading it again ... I says applicants or drivers who 'have' impaired awareness not 'had'. It also says that the changes are to make things clearer but to be honest I think the original guidelines were much easier to understand!

I take the report to also mean that those of us on insulin on 3 year licences will move to a 1 year licence and have to see a diabetologist (whatever one of them is - diabetic consultant) once a year. I notice their impact assessment didn't include the additional cost to the driver or the NHS!
I got confused as to Group 1,2 and Categories.

If you go to the DVLA web site there is no such thing as a Group 1 vehicle (Categories are the new name for Groups and the Groups (pre 1997) were A-N, now they are A-P with some 1s thrown in), my brain hurts.

Has anyone seen any statistics as to accidents caused by Hypos as against caused by alcohol? It just seems that we are being picked on.

I think group 1 is cars and group 2 is lorries and buses - please correct me if I am wrong someone! So I think that what you are saying Vicsetter is for group 2 vehicles ie. lorry drivers etc

It's a difficult subject but I think it's fair to stop someone from driving temporarily if they don't know they might be going hypo. It can come on quickly and not always where you can stop and test.

It does mean that anyone without hypo awareness will just keep it secret rather than seek help with it. :(

moving to Driving / DVLA section, where there's already more discussion on this topic.
