Hi,

Just got of hospital and I have now been given Insulin inj for the first time. I have been given approx 4 weeks worth from the hospital. I was told it’s just to get my levels down. TBH not given much advice from hospital.

I inject morning and afternoon I also take Metformin.

Can anyone please give me some advice as to what and what not to do?

1. Do I need to inform DVLA? (Never had a hypo lowest i get is 9.9) I drive for a living (C+E)
2. Can I still ride my motorbike?
3. When do I let my insurance company know. My company I work for already know.

Thanks in advance.

You should find the following useful
https://www.diabetes.org.uk/living-with-diabetes/life-with-diabetes/driving provides a good overview
https://assets.publishing.service.g...e-to-insulin-treated-diabetes-and-driving.pdf for DVLA instructions for driving a car and motorbike.
https://assets.publishing.service.g...for_drivers_with_insulin_treated_diabetes.pdf for DVLA instructions for driving lorries and coaches.

You will read in these that you need to inform the DVLA and to maintain your C+E license, you need 6 weeks of two daily finger prick readings. Although car and motorbike license is more straightforward. But you still need to inform DVLA to drive whilst taking insulin. Although you have not had a hypo, you are at risk of doing so.
You need to let your insurance company know to drive but it should not affect the cost.

You must immediately stop driving category ce vehicles until the DVLA have confirmed you’re ok to drive them, and inform the DVLA who may or may not remove that part of your licence until you can prove you’ve been stable enough on insulin for a long enough period of time, you’ll need to fingerprick twice a day even on days you aren’t driving and even if using a cgm. You can read online about the requirements.

You can still ride your motorbike but need to inform dvla and familiarise yourself with the rules around driving on insulin for that too.

Let your motorbike insurance company know asap that you’ve changed licence type to a medically restricted licence. Remember you may need to inform other types of insurance if relevant such as travel insurance.
