Ombudsman André Marin says motorists with uncontrolled diabetes pose as great a threat to road safety as impaired drivers.

And Marin said it is “high time” the province started educating motorists about the dangers of driving with serious medical conditions such as diabetes.

“I think it is as serious as impaired driving. There is no doubt about it. People pass out at the wheel . . . turning their car into an unguided missile,” Marin told reporters Wednesday at Queen’s Park, where he presented a report containing 19 recommendations to improve the system of reporting.

“We don’t tolerate drunk driving in Ontario and we shouldn’t tolerate situations where hypoglycemic unaware or uncontrolled drivers are out there posing a threat to public safety,” he said.
