i have recently been diagnosed type 2 informed my car insurers they have no problems with me driving as normal .i have spoken to my works occupational health advisers they have said i cant drive my works van till my blood sugar level drops it currantly 16.2 can any body shed any light please

Your car insurers perhaps didn't ask you if your condition was well controlled, perhaps relying on your disclosure of any problems or the fact as a type 2 not on insulin you're unlikely to experience a hypo. I'd suggest that you confirm the conversation with your insurers in writing.

Telephone calls can all to often get lost or not noted on your record.

As for your company, this is a health and safety issue, their insurers may well be far stricter about health conditions and really at these levels I think they are wise to restrict you until your control is better.

You're also coming close to the levels where some eye problems through high blood sugars can become apparent and the fatigue from diabetes can be even more present.

Therefore driving a van when the company know your levels aren't in control is potentially life threatening, yours, if no-one elses and they have taken an appropriate in my opinion.

Back to your own insurers, I wonder if they wouldn't try to duck out of covering you considering they could quite easily establish you're aware your employers have barred you from driving until your control is better. Insurers are funny creatures and if it came down to the fact they discovered you knew your levels weren't good and had been restricted from driving by your company, in their opinion they may consider you specifically avoided telling them this fact, they could get funny with you.

From a personal perspective I wouldn't get in a car and drive if my levels were, without explanation over 10mmols, reasonable explanation being mainly having just eaten etc. However, I am unsure if there is a maximum recommended safe level for driving.
