- Relationship to Diabetes
- Type 1
Hi I am a new member and my name is ian . I have had diabetes for 50 years and I am also a podiatrist working with diabetic feet. I am type 1 and as a result of this my driving licence was changed without any consultation from the DVLA. I am not sure when this happened and have had no problems driving since I passed my test in 1983? However the DVLA decided to restrict my licence to vehicles below 3.5 tons kg. I used to be able to drive 7.5 ton trucks under a normal licence and had no issues doing so. Until fairly recently I have been driving vehicles in excess of 3.5 tons without any issues with my driving or my diabetes. I feel that I am being discriminated against by the DVLA without any foundation in that some medic at Swansea has decided to stop me doing this without any assessment of my health and my abilities. I am sure that I am not the only one who has been affected like this. I feel that type 1 diabetics are being treated generally as opposed to being treated based on their abilities in dealing with their health and driving. This is a concern as diabetics type 1 who require the class 2 could have lost their jobs? Has this happened to anybody else and if so how did you deal with it?
