Hi Glenn.
I don't think that, at the moment, there is any way you can drive an HGV as a type 1. From a quick search, there seems to be a few petitions about it and pressure to change it but it looks as if it's not happening just yet.
I hope someone better informed can tell you otherwise.

That's one of the things we touched on at the DAFNE course. I think it's bad news for you at this time. Fingers crossed for you that something comes up soon.
Hi,glenn i`m in the same boat as you mate,just waiting for my licence to come back from dvla without my hgv 1 on it.
Not only has my life changed i have lost my job as well was only diagnosed in september now injecting 5 times a day.

Welcome Kett. I also lost driving qualifications (minibuses and vans) with diagnosis, which has meant difficulties with work ever since. If you're in a union, then it's well worth asking for their advice, but there's no negotiating with DVLA about HGV or minibuses for work, just for vans.

Sorry to hear that you are in the same boat, i 've alwys said the job and hours are long enough without interferance from people who dont have a clue what they are talking about. Dont know about you but i get plenty of notice when a hypo is on its way, leaving me plenty of time to pull over in a safe place and rectify the matter. i consider my self sensible and would never drive if i thought i was putting anybody or anything in danger.

Am I right in thinking that you've only been diagnosed for 4 weeks ?
This isn't long enough for you to know how you react in all situations and to safely say whether you could drive as safely as you did before whilst in charge of an HGV. I'm not saying that you shouldn't be given the chance to regain your licence, but you're still very much in the early days.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Glenn.
HGV and PSV entitlements will be permanently revoked if license holders become insulin dependent. No way out of that one.
Hopefully, your employer will find you other work under the Disability Discrimination Act. They have to make reasonable adjustments. One of the guys at work was given a job in the office when the DVLA took his bus entitlement away.
