Driving Licence Renewal

As it is my son going through this DVLA renewal problem, my thoughts have been - he has T1D so caution is required, I understand that. However, as someone who was born with extremely poor eyesight, 1 eye ended up practically blind with cataract, it was always in my hands to ensure I complied with DVLA regulations, if I did not go for regular eye check ups, no one would be the wiser. Surely it is discriminating against the diabetic community by putting 3 year limit on driving licences, Drs/ opticians would be able to notify DVLA direct if anyone was a danger on the road ?

They can already do exactly that ! However, I doubt very much whether you're taking medication that can cause you go go hypo at the wheel - which is the WHOLE reason why anyone taking insulin gets 3 year licences !

Well just like several others on here I emailed my MP 29/5/2021 and this morning I got my Licence back after waiting since November 2020 coincidently or not I complained to my MP and my Licence magically appears a few days later, I'm well happy.

Regards

My license is due for renewal soon but I've had no letter from dvla. Can i renew it without having letter? And can you drive if your license has expired but dvla hasn't renewed it due to striking or backlogs?
Worried as i need car to drive to hospital weekly which is a round trip of 120miles so can't pay for taxi, not that i'd want to with covid lurking about.
Thanks.

If your licence renewal application has been received by the dvla and is being dealt with when your licence runs out, you can drive under Section 88 as long as a doctor agrees you still meet dvla criteria. My GP agreed and put a note on my records just in case it was needed.
I'm not sure whether you can renew without a letter, maybe someone else could answer that, sorry. Try ringing the DVLA medical line.

I renewed mine online this year (due on 17 April, but only car, no C1 or anything, so when I was 68 they just renewed it until my 71st birthday having already lost my C1 when that changed for insulin users and which I'd never needed or wanted anyway as it happens) Nothing changed medically, still T1, still got hypo symptoms, still had hypos which nobody's assisted me with other than passing me the biscuits ...... got new licence for another 3 years within less than a week.

So yeah - easy peasy as long as nowt's changed. If 70+, can't apply online if you wish to retain C1 etc and you still have to have a medical to retain your C1 etc.

I guess all us 70 year olds can remember our first little red book driving licence. Cute now but no problem with the photo id. Was just remembering 🙂

Applied on-line for my over 70 licence renewal on Wed pm and the licence appeared today, speedy or what, absolutely astonished.

I'm still waiting for the licence to appear, but the documents have been returned.
From various announcements on radio and tv it seems that as long as you are legal to drive then you can go on doing so after the licence expires if it is being processed.
