I have just received the application for renewal of my licence as will be 70. I have never had a photo licence, so can I renew on line. It is not obvious from the form.
No diabetic or other health complications. Thanks

I'm virtually certain you can. Just Google it. If you have had an online passport application in the recent past they may be able to use the photo for that as they store them on .GOV.

Think you might be able to if you have a recent passport photo? - but not if you don't already have photo ID registered with the UK Government. Was easy for me as only ever holding a 3 year licence since passing my test, I already held a photo licence from not long after they introduced them in the UK, which did not expire until I was 71 as I no longer held C1 etc as they took that off all of us insulin dependent folk a while ago. Pete was like you (but non diabetic) but all by post anyway when he was 70, 3 years ago and wanted to retain his grandfather rights C1 in any case (and his motorbike licence) so needed a medical, too.

Do you have to get a photo one, I don't believe it's a legal requirement? I know that if you have a paper one and it needs renewing you can renew it with another paper one.

Here is the link - https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence-at-70

Watch out when your googling, there are lots of dodgy agencies that volunteer to do it for you, for a unnecessary and sizeable fee.

Hope you manage to get it sorted with a minimum of fuss @Leadinglights

Some members have had a very unfortunate time with the DVLA covid working, backlog and subsequent industrial action I’m afraid :(

Being 70 is the milestone that now forces you in the UK to getting a photo one, if you wish to continue to drive legally either here or anywhere else. If you ain't legally driving in the UK, this automatically means you aren't authorised to legally drive anywhere else either AFAIK. For normal people, at least.

Thanks all for the info, submitted application on line, using passport info they held for the photo even though I look like a criminal and I haven't changed a bit in 8 years HaHaHa. They say I should get it in two weeks. I have to cut my old licence up and send back.
