Driving an emergency vehicle

Hello,

I'm looking to find any information on successful cases where any type-1 diabetics have been risk assessed and have been found fit to drive any emergency vehicle to emergencies. This can be either using blue lights or responding without blue lights.

I'm aware of the DVLA guidance, and that the responsibility is now placed on the organisation to risk assess the individual, however I work for a category 1 emergency service that claims there is a blanket ban within the service on type-1 diabetics driving any of our vehicles to emergency calls.

If anyone has any details pertaining to successful cases, that can be shared, I would be grateful to hear.

I have spoken with the relevant departments within our service and requested to be risk assessed personally, however, this request has not been granted and I have been stood down from driving to emergencies. I believe that this places me at a disadvantage and may fall under indirect discrimination according to the equality act 2010.

If anyone has any trusted information on any of the above, especially legal cases, please do let me know.

Thanks.

This article writes about a paramedic with Type 1 https://www.theguardian.com/lifeand...e-who-changed-course-in-mid-life-and-loved-it

I know she loves driving her "van" but has a few additional (and frustrating) hoops to jump through to get her license renewed each year. But she is a great example of someone who drives an emergency vehicle with Type 1.

Have you spoken to the Diabetes UK helpline? Their number is at the top of every page.

The only blanket ban is the armed forces. Any other blanket ban is against the Equality Act 2010

I have found the https://www.equalityadvisoryservice.com/ very helpful in the past with employment matters. As @helli suggested give the helpline a call.
