I have bought some small dried fruit boxes; each box is 28g - calories are 77kcal/ protein 09.g. Carbonhydrate 20.3g (of which sugars 15.9g); Fat 0.1g of which saturates 0.09g; is this bad or not?

I just don't get the above....

Many thanks
Amanda

Dried fruit is pretty high sugar and will hit your blood sugar quickly, I'm afraid to say :( Normally, you should try and avoid anything that is above 10g of sugar per 100g as it suggests something that is high GI.

Dried fruit always spikes me - I avoid it like the plague.

Interestingly, I've been suffering from a UTI and I have drinking a lot of organic cranberry juice and, if anything, my numbers have been lower which surprised me.

Someone I work with uses a handfull of dried fruit to treat a hypo wth. He wont have jelly babies because they contain gelatin (he is a vegan) and he hates lucozade with a passion, but says the dried fruit works well and as an added bonus is one of his 5 a day fruit and vege.

If you read the part on sugar,

High = More than 15g of total sugars per 100g.
Low = 5g of total sugars or less per 100g.

The amounts of carbs/proteins etc you found are for one 28g box.
100g contains 72.6g carb of which 56.9g is sugar (def more than 15g) so very high in sugar.

Most fruits contain a lot of water, so when dried the sugar becomes a large proportion of the weight.

If you were to rehydrate it (soak in water overnight?), the figures would become rather more healthy, although it would rather defeat the object of buying it ! :D

Ray Mears always recommends banana and raisin sandwiches as an energy boost on long hikes. For that very reason, I've never tried it. 😉🙂

ohhhh I love banana sandwiches.....I might give that a try and see how my sugars are. I donated the fruits to my colleague; I'm not meaning mean, honest but he eats all day; must have hollow legs.

Thanks for the feedback; Amanda x 🙂

Hi Amanda,
Banana is very high carb as well. The riper it is the higher the sugar content.
So putting a banana in a sandwich will cause you no end of problems. Bread causes most type twos a major problem as well.
So if you want to eat bread as well as a banana don't eat them at the same time.

I have just bought a large bag of dried dates. I am suffering from constipation since I have lost weight so I had 4 yesterday. I didnt check my BG afterwards though. Will try it later. I love dried fruit.

Hi veganlass

Water is your best bet for constipation. Boring & tasteless I know but I guarantee it'll work.

Will be amazed if the dates don't give you a nasty spike. But hey we're all different 🙂

Sarah 🙂
