I came across this article from 1923, reproduced in a recent newspaper. I never realised Dr. Banting visited the U.K., and addressed a meeting of the BMA in Portsmouth.
What is interesting, is that to the medical profession, the development of insulin not only provided a life saving therapy, but it aided research into the theory that diabetes wasn't one condition with one cause. (The fact that insulin seemed to work less well in some patients, with diet still being an important part of the therapy, led to the distinction of Type 1 and Type 2, I assume.)
I also like the final paragraph about the patient who carried his own insulin and syringe round with him, and did his own injections, and said it was on a par with shaving.
