The number of medical students needs to double in order to plug the gap in the doctor workforce, a leading physician has said.

Dr Bod Goddard, president elect of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), said that the Government must do more to increase the number of student doctors.

There are currently around 7,500 medical students.

In 2016, the Government pledged to expand undergraduate medical training places by 1,500.

But Dr Goddard said that this needs to be expanded by a further 6,000 doctors in order to fill workforce gaps and account for the rising numbers of physicians who are leaving medicine or choosing to retire early.

And, of course, the EU and non EU doctors hightailing it home because of Maybots “very hostile environment “ for immigrants. And the Med students who fly off to Australia as soon as they qualify to avoid slave labour in the NHS. And what about nurses and midwives - with bursaries withdrawn, how do you tempt them back into the NHS?

Thanks for training them for us!

There do seem to be a lot of Brit GP's around here, including my excellent doc from Liverpool. He's tough, nuggety and just a little bit of a sadist - like all the best docs. 🙂

The ideology of cuts has meant no real investment for years, it seems inevitable that it would lead us to where we are today :( And it looks like more dogmatism and stubbornness to understand a mood change will lead us into an even worse future :( I've often wondered how the demographics might have changed should there be another vote, given that there are more young people now eligible to vote and maybe fewer older people. Most members of the public on voxpops I have seen who say 'just get on with it', without observing that the negotiations have led us nowhere in the past 18 months, seem to be of the older section of society, and it won't really affect them :(

Or do what the Scottish government did in the independence vote and allow 16 year olds to vote.

Speaking of which, current polls show 51% in favour of independence. Folk in Scotland are well p****d off with May refusing Scotland any say at all in Brexit negotiations. They got even more upset when Theresa May said in the negotiations that any special arrangement for Northern Ireland must not apply to Scotland, despite Scottish representations to arrange their own immigration laws. England will revealed as a bankrupt little country if Scotland goes independent with all the secondary taxation on fags and booze and petrol disappearing.
