Hi all,

been doing a fair few basal tests recently, specifically for the time period 07:00 - 12:00.

I've noticed a rather odd trend - namely that I appear to be getting a double rise in bG in the mornings. One DP rise is at about 3-4am (the one that a lot of diabetics get, and something I picked up on ages go when doing overnight testing; have now corrected basal rates to account for this) but I've now discovered another rise (when doing the fasting test) at about 10am too. So it rises at about 3-4am, drops between 4-9am and then starts creeping up again at about 10am, before dropping again at about 11am.

Does anyone else get this?

I'm obviously aware I can change my basal rate to account but conscious that the advice (on the basal teting sticky) in the pumping section says to avoid too many fluctuations in rates which is slightly unsettling.

I seem to have this problem, I can double, treble, quadruple in bloods from 3am

I hope you get it sorted soon 🙂

sorry Laura, what I meant is that I get two spikes, not double in bG values 🙂

imagine a camel with one hump (what most diabetes specialists will tell you is normal for people and called the Dawn Phenomenon), well I seem to be getting a double camel hump....

Ah sorry, I was under the impression of a "normal" spike

i'm far from normal 😉 !!!

deus these are fasting tests so food is irrelevant.

but normally have weetabix crunchy bran which - from a post elsewhere o this site - i've done spike tests on and found it doesn't spike me.

i see where you're going but not on this occasion.... 😉

Well, I was working on the principle that the spike happens when you eat but you've only picked it up on the basal test. I was thinking if you we're eating a small or no breakfast, your body might be in the habit of overcompensating.

Sounds though like it's just what your body does. Out of interest, did you have any tea/coffee during the test?

I do get odd little rises and falls, and I certainly wouldnt consider the frequency of basal change you are considering here anything to worry about.

If you were changing every hour or half hour by big increments I might begin to wonder whether a few more tests might help to ensure it was a pattern rather than a 'one of those days', but this seems absolutely fine. Up a bit... down a bit... back up a bit...

You'll need to change an hour or two before you want to see the effect (as I'm sure you know), but it seems like you've enough 'gap' between these BG wobbles to do that without everything overlapping.

My basic patterns have around 8 of 9 different rates over the 24 hours, which I don't think is extreme at all.

I have rates from 0.5 up to .85 and this does not worry me at all its what i need. I have the biggest change from 0.5 to .45 but this works for me. I have 0.5 for three hours from 4 to 6 pm only because my consultant doesnt like any voids i used to set to 0 . I can drop like a stone at this time always have from mdi days but this rate keeps me steady
