David Cameron yesterday backed under-fire NHS chief Sir David Nicholson - amid mounting pressure on him to step down in the wake of the Mid Staffordshire hospital care scandal.

The Prime Minister rallied to Sir David's defence - and called on his critics not to use him as a "scapegoat" for all that is wrong in the system.

More than 1,000 people died needlessly at Mid Staffs because of shockingly poor levels of care, the damning Francis report revealed.

Sir David was in charge of the body overseeing the hospital during the breakdown in care.

But yesterday Mr Cameron, wading into the row, said he should be allowed to get on with his job.

Interesting - I suppose they can't afford for the CE to be replaced with all the changes due in April 🙄
