Recently, I spent a morning moving furniture around London with a Hungarian van driver. He was cheap. He was also quite cheerful. ?You have a beautiful country!? he declared, as we turned into Seven Sisters Road. Our free healthcare came in for particular praise. So did our tax system. However vile the HMRC, it?s much worse in Hungary, apparently.
I wonder if this is the sort of person Jeremy Hunt had in mind this week, when he talked about making the NHS ?fairer and more sustainable for British families and taxpayers?. The Health Secretary has been parping a new study that suggests tumorous foreigners cost us ?2 billion a year. He plans to charge them extra to see our doctors, claiming this will save ?200 million.
