We will find out in a few days if Susie is definitely diabetic. Her BG on Saturday was 18.3 and on Sunday was 10.7. We have been told to stop her steroids with immediate effect to see if this helps and she has also had a test similar to a HBA 1C. Does anyone have any experience of looking after a pet with diabetes?

No direct expeirience myself but have known several people whose pets have had diabetes and lived a good life. I think the same or similar rules apply to pets as well as people but can't say for suer

My first dg a collie developed diabetes at the age of 14 he died of old age at just over 15.
You need to inject insulin as dogs can not have tablets. Keep meals and exercise the same each day. cut out the treats if any given Same with humans carbs needs to be accounted for in the diet.
The vets will tell you that you need a special diet bought from them 🙄 at a very high price. This is bunk just adjust the insulin to what she normally eats.
Dogs soon get used to the idea of having insulin injections and normally sit and wait for their jab as it's associated with food. 🙂
As Jake my collie was a very energetic boy and loved his walks it was always safest to carry some milk and glucose in a small container for when we were out just in case of hypo's. (He loved milk)
I couldn't afford the insulin from my vets so Jake used to share mine 🙂

Thanks Caroline. Thanks for sharing that information Sue. Susie is 14 and a collie was well🙂

i can ask someone i know whos cat is diabetic if you want?

If you could ask Laura that would be great as it is always good to get different perspectives. Thanks very much.

Our dog was diagnosed diabetic in January, so please ask any questions any I will try and answer them, you can PM me if you prefer.

Joey is a Westie/Cairn cross, age five, on two injections a day.

Thank you very much AJ. We're seeing the vet tomorrow morning and will then know more about whether she has got diabetes. I will probably have lots of questions if she has.

There seem to be a few people who have pest with diabetes, I wonder if it is possible to have a message board for them?

morning, i've heard back from my friend. he cant remember which insulin his cat is on but says this - i hope it helps in some way.

for my cat 3mg twice daily after food. Doses may vary due to the severity of the condition. The vet supplies insulin and syringes and a sharps bin, at a price of course.

Thanks Laura. Caroline I think a pets with diabetes section would be a good idea.

I completely agree. I don't know how I would have coped with the first few months after leaving work if I hadn't had Susie

Thanks Laura. Caroline I think a pets with diabetes section would be a good idea.

That does sound a good idea Caroline & I agree AJ about a section for our furry friends
