Our 13 year old dog has been diagnosed with lower spinal problems and was due to have an MRI yesterday following xrays showing spinal stenosis - exactly the problem I had last year when I had spinal surgery. However blood tests taken showed she had extremely low blood sugar (2.1) and had been at a level in the 2s for the last 2 tests over the past 3 weeks. However although not diabetic she has gone to the opposite extreme and has now had a CT scan as it could be she has a pancreatic insulinoma which produces excess unsulin. Shame I cannot share her excess!! Full diagnosis and likely treatment will be given when we return Friday. Luckily the vet referral service we had been sent to for the original scan had ct scanner on premises and are also specialists in oncology so they knew an MRI could have exacerbated a tumour hence the change to ct. Her spine problems have responded extremely well to pain killers and added to this I now have glucose boost to give her with her feed.
