Dr Abhay Mutha, consulting Diabetologist of Ruby Hall Clinic, said the government finally plans on revoking the ban on Pioglitazone, a key drug in treating diabetes in the country.

Dr Mutha, Director of Diabetes Care and Research Center, said the anti-diabetic drug Pioglitazone, which was banned by the health ministry a few days ago, is likely to be back in pharmacies soon. The government took its decision after holding a meeting with 12 doctors, a majority of whom argued that there is no affordable alternative to this drug that is prescribed for a large number of patients across the country.

Pioglitazone is an important anti-diabetic drug for people suffering from insulin resistance (IR), with more than 30 to 40 lakh patients across the country being dependent on the drug. Pointing out that there is no suitable alternative for this drug in the country, Mutha said that all patients would have to shift to costlier options like Gliptins or Insulin.
