Postpericardiotomy Syndrome—it sounds complicated but it just means “swelling of the membrane around the heart”—is a common surgery complication. So are postoperative atrial fibrillation (abnormal heart beats) and pericardial/pleural effusions (excessive fluid around the heart and the lungs). These complications can affect more than one-third of all cardiac surgery patients, resulting in morbidity and longer hospital stays which can also lead to higher hospital readmission rates which require more invasive treatments.

Because of these complications, doctors have been interested in finding treatments that can reduce the risk. Colchicine has already shown promise as a successful medical treatment for gout. More importantly, it is a highly toxic hormone of the meadow saffron and autumn crocus plant that is native to Europe but not grows naturally in parts of North America. Doctor have been able to standardize it in tablet form, powder form, and in ampoules of a sterile solution.
