May James believes she should not be reading sympathy cards and preparing for her husband David's funeral.

When his heart stopped beating on New Year's Eve, doctors at the hospital he had been taken to - which cannot be named for legal reasons - did not resuscitate him.

The hospital trust was exercising a right it had won in court. But the family believes that was not a doctor's choice to make.

Would that man have actually been happy living in a body that prevented him doing all he'd done previously? Even if his brain would - and who's to say that? What brain damge was it, what was the prognosis of that condition? What about the kidneys, could they have recovered or would he have been on dialysis for ever thereafter?

Oh, there are always more questions than answers in these cases, aren't there?
