At risk of diabetes
Hi all, I’m a bit confused and hoping you can help. A bit of backstory. I’ve had 4 pregnancies and during each one I’ve had gestational diabetes, with my last pregnancy needing insulin. Roll on 6 years later and I’ve noticed over the last few months that after I’ve eaten I’m getting horrendous tiredness and if I’m not at work I’m falling asleep. This has been getting worse so I cranked up my finger prick tester machine I was given during my last pregnancy and have been taking results for a good few weeks now. The readings I’ve been getting; around 10-11 on waking, highest has been 29 2 hours after food but generally around the 15 mark , prompted me to call the doctor and arrange a blood test. I’ve got the results today: A1c - 40 and 5.8%. This has totally confused me as I’m getting much higher readings on my machine. Do I need to speak to doctor again??

It’s worth a chat with the doctor because if it’s not diabetes that’s making you drowsy you should be checked for other things and whilst you’re there you can talk about the finger pricks.

Welcome @hammonddxo You did the right thing getting an HbA1C. Is it possible your meter is faulty or your strips are out of date? How often were you testing? Are they going to repeat the HBA1C?

I had some strips that had been left in a car for a few months and were close to their use by date - when I used them I was getting sky high readings compared to my other meters.

I’m so silly. Yes the strips are out of date. There were unopened so didn’t check the date! I’ll order some more and retest for a few weeks and see if that makes a difference!

That would explain it! If you were really 29, I'd expect you to really feel poorly.

Hope the fresh strips put your mind at rest @hammonddxo

That level of tiredness isn’t usual though - might be worth getting some tests run to see if it might be something else non-blood-glucose related (eg a vitamin deficiency like vit B12, or perhaps thyroid).

Hope you get to the bottom of things 🙂

Thank you I’ll see if I can get that checked out
