Type 2
Hey everyone , you may have a better idea then me at this point , so I went to my doctor this morning to see what the results were of my bloods I did .
So I’m still producing insulin but I have no antibodies as that came back negative , so does that mean I’m type 2 or 1 ??? My doctor is firm on type 2 cause if I had antibodies I’d be type 1 ? Can someone please shed some light on that for me please ??
I got another prescription for more metform as 1000mg so I only have to take 1 tablet instead of 2 of the 500mg . My glucose came back as 5.1 in which at the start I was 7.1 .

Type 2. Is the 5.1 your hba1c ? Or did you do a random finger prick? Either way that is excellent. Looks like you are on you way to really turning this around. They have reduced your meds already, so whatever you are doing is clearly working. Give yourself a pat on the back! Try to relax a little now as getting super stressed will not help your blood sugars. I’m really happy for you and you should be proud of yourself.

The blood tests, and the fact that you’ve been able to improve your blood sugars with diet changes, mean that you’re type 2 not type 1

Just to add.. if you had tested positive for antibodies this would indicate an attack on the beta cells that produce insulin. Eventually type 1’s will not have any insulin, where as you are producing insulin but for whatever reason your body wasn’t effectively using it … had become resistant.

Your doctor is saying you’re Type 2 @Jacinta (Australian) which makes sense from other things you’ve said here.

I’m Type 1.In Type 1, our own immune system reacts to the insulin-producing cells in our pancreas as ‘foreign’ and destroys them, leaving us unable to control our blood sugar and having to take insulin. Our bodies produce antibodies against these pancreas cells. Detecting those antibodies is a way to diagnose Type 1. You do not have these antibodies.

You are, however, still making insulin of your own. These two things plus other things like your weight, etc, are why the doctor has said you’re Type 2.

My HBA1c was 8.2 the 5.1 is the glucose level which if I remember correctly at the start it was 7.1 (glucose level ) .
Thankyou so much Emmal_76 , I’m just going to continue what I’m doing and hope my HBA1c goes down again , as that test is next month . I’ll defiantly have to distract myself from now on and control these sugar levels . Thankyou so much again 🙂

Ahh I see, well keep up the good work and your hba1c will most definitely come down! No thanks necessary… these doctors appointments go by in a whizz sometimes, then you leave thinking what did he say ? And why didn’t I ask more questions ? Lucky we all got each other !

@Jacinta (Australian). One way of looking at it is to climb on one of my hobby-horses..... and that is the daftness of the desire to give everything a label. Labelling things has its upsides because it can provide common understanding but it has downside of encouraging gathering as many things as possible under the label and that is a recipe for providing common confusion.

The T1 label is fine if confined to those with an autoimmune condition that has killed off the insulin production function of the pancreas. Simple, straightforward and it leads to common understanding.

The T2 label encompasses all those who have problems with auto blood glucose control but do not merit the T1 label and this leads to anything but a common understanding. You get the label whether your diabetes is something to do with ability of your pancreas to produce enough insulin when needed for some reason or other or whether you produce enough insulin and your system for some reason or another is inefficient in using it. Maybe even you have a metabolism that is so efficient at turning carbs into blood glucose that it would swamp an otherwise acceptable pancreatic function. Maybe, maybe, maybe.....

So, how about binning the T2 label and thinking of yourself as Diabetic (not clearly Type1)? Whatever you call it the focus must be to get your blood glucose under control and the way of doing that is to use guesswork and experimentation around the factors known to influence blood glucose until you find a method that suits you.

Hey Docb , I completely understand where you are coming from .
I’m trying my hardest to not label everything , the reason why I label things is because I’m terrified I’m trying to not let it be that way and sometimes if I label things it gets my head around on what it actually is so I can understand better , I mean I have never ever asked questions because in my mind I think I understand when I don’t . So the only way for me to understand what things are is either asking questions to understand it or label it and I work my brain around it . This is all new to me like I didn’t even know about diabetes before I was told I was one , secondly I always got told by labels with type 1 and type 2. But I’ll try and not label it as my main focus is on getting my blood sugar levels down . Hell I managed to get my fasting level from 7.1 to 5.4 or 5.1 . Which is a crazy for me . I promise i won’t label type 1 and type 2 .

Glad you’ve had the results back @Jacinta (Australian) - and that the changes you have been making have helped.

Onwards and downwards!

So am I everyupsanddowns , I technically still have to wait til October for my Specialist to completely confirm it but yeah my doctor believes type 2 and I kinda explained how it was type 2 to her and said well if I’m able to get my sugars and my fasting glucose down then I’m 100% positive is type 2 and not type 1 and believe it or not she agreed . I feel amazing after numbers going down and loosing weight , if I keep doing what I’m doing hopefully my HBA1c will also drop aswell . Then time to focus on my left eye problem aswell .
