We all assume that doctors choose treatments based on what?s best for us, as patients. But would you feel nervous if you knew that your doctor stood to make money from the treatments they recommend? And is it peculiarly British to feel squeamish at that thought?
On April 1, the Government?s controversial new NHS reforms will take effect. GPs will now run local Clinical Commissioning Groups, deciding which NHS services should be commissioned. These will replace the old local Primary Care Trusts and have a combined annual budget of more than ?60 billion.
But the British Medical Journal has revealed a disturbing fact. One in every three GPs on the new local boards has a financial ?conflict of interest?. Many of these hold shares in large private-sector health firms, which are competing for lucrative contracts from GP commissioning groups.
