Do steroids in eyes increase insulin requirements?

Last Monday, when I didn't eat, my BGs went too low with 10 units levemir in the morning and 16 units in the evening. Since the eye op I've had to increase my levemir to 16 in the morning and 22 at night and it still doesn't seem enough. I had a steroid injection in my eye and am on four lots of steroid drops a day - do you think this could have increased my levemir requirements?? I'm trying to find out what is causing the problem so that I don't suddenly have a load of hypos when I go back to work

Steroids can increase blood sugars - so it could be the cause. The other thing to consider is the healing process - which in of itself is liable to increase blood glucose. Is there a chemist near you open today where you could quiz the pharmacist ?

Hope that you get things back on track soon.

Thanks Margie, you're probably right about the healing process. Unfortunately I can't really get to a chemist at the moment. Guess I'm just being impatient with wanting to get things back to normal ASAP. I'm not a very patient patient I did my best to leave the hospital less than an hour after they'd finished the general anaesthetic!

When I recently saw a doctor about my frozen shoulder he suggested a steroid injection. I decided against it but quizzed him on the effects on b/s. He said that a steroid injection would raise sugar levels (thus increasing insulin requirements) although it shouldn't be as dramatic a rise as in oral steroids. I asked why ( I like to get my money's worth!!) and he said it's because an injection would be a slow release steroid instead of a fast one with the tablets. Poor you, I think we are a right pair aren't we? xx

hi Flutterby we really are a right pair, sounds like we've got matching frozen shoulders as well as everything else:D. I had never realised that going into my forties would have such an impact xx

When Les had his eye operation the steriod in the eye drops was enough to bump his BG up.. But soon dropped back down after he stopped the drops..

I'm glad I'm not the only one who have declined steriod injection for frozen shoulder... Me I now have a matching pair both mine are frozen:(

I really don't know how you manage with the two being frozen but I didn't fancy the jab, no guarantee it would work, possibility of more pain and infection and high sugar levels - nah, I've got enough to contend with!

Roll on the 50's - maybe things will get better with age!! Lol

Thanks for saying about Les....I guess this means that as I cut back on my steroid drops then I will probably need to cut back the Levemir in a similar way.

Every sympathy about the frozen shoulders. I had one which was helped a lot by an MUA and lots of physio but then the other flared up with pain a few weeks ago.....and I've decided to see if I can manage with just a combination of paracetamol/ibuprofen/heat etc. I did have painkilling injections in one of my shoulders when the pain became so much that I ended up in A&E - the injections were not that nice - gave a senstation that felt like hundreds of pins and needles - and they only stopped the pain for an hour! There doesn't seem to be any "easy" way of dealing with frozen shoulders:(

Can't wait to the 50's - it's got to start improving now for all of us!! Power of positive thinking (or something like that). Wow wouldn't it be great if positive thinking really did work...............

Yes, I can assure you that the 50s are the new 20s - you only need look at what a fine figure of a man I am, glowing with health and vitality, mind sharp as a 6mm 31g pen needle, more fleet of foot than a greased ferret down a drainpipe, and with the mental capacity of the Bodleian Library!

At least, that's what I keep telling myself! 😉

mmmmmmmh does being in your 50's also have a dramatic effect with regard to self-perception???🙄

Not quite sure really, laugh as much as possible and try to see the funny side, as well no point in crying for over an hour, because you were daft enough to have a nap on the settee and you can't get yourself up so have no option but to wait until les gets in from work😡

But must admit that this weekend has been the pits, I haven't even been able to drive the car (and it has power steering) due to being impatient on Friday not waiting for Les to come up stairs to wash my hair, set off my shoulder big time and it hasn't really subsided that much😡 I've only got between 25-30% mobility left in them

But enough of me

Back to eyes..

AJ, yes I would keep a very close eye on your BG's has you drop the eye drop quota down...

And hopefully when I get to 50 my frozen shoulder will decided to stay in the 40's and finally sort themselves out!
