Hi, my Dad who is 83 has Type 1 and is struggling with his readings which are constantly high this week.

Welcome to the forum @moo21

i am sorry to hear that your Dad is struggling at the moment. Can you tell us a little about how he manages his diabetes.
Which insulins is he using?
Is he on injections or using a pump?
Is he in the care of his GP or the specialist team at the hospital.
Is he carb counting and adjusting doses at each meal?

Sorry for the long list of questions but it helps us to give more effective responses to your questions.

There can be a quite a few things that cause our levels to rise.
I find that if I am ill my levels will rise, even a day before the symptoms appear.
Has your Dad changed his diet in any way? If he is eating more carbohydrates then that couod also account for the rise in his levels.

Sorry to hear how difficult your Dad is finding things at the moment @moo21 :(

It might be worth your Dad swapping to a ‘fresh’ pen (or cartridge). Just in case his current one has lost potency for any reason.

Does he have a means to check for ketones? If so what levels is he seeing?

If he experiences breathlessness, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain, please call NHS111 or get him to A&E as it could be potentially quite serious :(

Hiya! How well does your dad know his diabetes - how long has he been diagnosed?

Thankyou for your responses. He has injections twice a day. Don't know what it is, sorry.
He does not really watch what he eats, tho the diabetic nurse has told him countless times about this.
I had a good talk to him today about eating too many carbs and the fact that he feels unwell and his readings being high are down too his diet and the fact that he couldn't get his pen to work so had been a day without insulin.
He is very tired and has a very dry mouth but no other symptoms.

As the title is DKA - are you worried he is developing DKA or is he already in hospital with it? If he thinks he has DKA he needs to go straight to hospital

I don't know enough about it to know if he has it and Dad has no idea what it is! I am just worried because his readings have been so high

On the odd occasions my blood glucose has been high enough (so above 13 ish anyway) for long enough to notice I have or may have ketones, I've always felt somewhat nauseous. My meter always suggests I test for ketones every single time my test result has been 13 or anywhere above - so that always applies whether it may be 13.1 or 30. The nearer it is to 13, the easier it is (relatively) to reduce it again.

So what sort of levels is he getting when he tests his blood glucose?
