hi all. i was recently in dka (exactly a week today) and it was my worst. my ph was less than 7. i was wanting to know, is it common/normal to throw up green?? i’ve never had that before and it’s left me slightly concerned. i also can’t find anything about it on the internet or from other people who have diabetes. i also had a fast heartbeat and chest pain. i heard that’s normal, but rare, has anyone else had anything similar? google says green means liver problems?? also had a nurse ask me if i took anything cause it was similar to that of an od (the throw up). very confusing lol

any help/advice is appreciated. thank you

Being sick can be a key symptom of DKA. Not always.

What was your BG at the time?

Vomit can be yellow or green. I’ve had that when I’ve had a tummy bug. If the nurse saw it and wasn’t overly worried about it, that suggests it’s ok.

I hope you’re feeling better now. Do you know what caused the DKA eg illness?

even without a tummy bug? it was just randomly green lol. i didn’t take my insulin. it’s a long story lol. the nurse thought it was ok but asked if i’d taken anything lol

Hi there @matthewthomas. Sorry to hear about your episode of DKA. Over Christmas too! Poor you. :(

When I was working as a teacher, I did see a little girl throw up green vomit - actually, it came out of her nostrils cos she was trying to hold it in until she got outside. It was like something in a jokey horror movie LOL. 😱

I hope you’re feeling better asap.

DKA causes major disruption to your whole body so I guess it’s possible that it contributed to the green vomit. When I was pregnant, I sometimes threw up so much I got bile-coloured (yellowy green) vomit.

If you want to share your long story, please do. You won’t get any judgement here. We all know how hard diabetes can be sometimes. I hope you’re feeling better now, physically and emotionally.

ohhh makes sense ahah. thank you so much. it means a lot 🙂 i can tell the story if your okay with it, but would you want it in the comments or private message? it maybe triggering :/

I don’t see any reason why you can’t tell your story here but I’ll tag @everydayupsanddowns just in case. There are lots of stories here where people have had difficult times or are struggling, so I think yours would be ok. My main concern is if you’re happy to tell it, and if doing so will be ok with you and not make you feel bad in any way. Think about it and see how you feel. Absolutely no pressure and your choice. If you want support, you know there are lots of kind people on the forum, but it’s a decision for you and it’s not one you have to rush 🙂

Sorry to hear about the DKA @matthewthomas

Hope you are feeling much better now.

Feel free to share as much or as little as you are comfortable with.

The green vomit does sound like bile.

Hope you are able to take your insulin regularly now. Was there a specific reason why you had skipped taking it? Sounds like you may need some additional help with that? And perhaps some specialist counselling / support?

thank you 🙂 tw.

i skipped taking insulin as a way to commit. i was so bad i was in resuscitation and the doctor was consistently putting me in icu. she told me i was the worst she’d seen in about a year and that i was going to sleep without realizing it, but then waking up. everything came down, but went back up again and the speed of the insulin and iv fluids had to be raised and they had to give me an injection of long acting insulin. i was there over christmas too :( sucked big time lol. the crisis team came and i’m known to the mental health team and i should be getting counseling some time this year

is the green throw up common in dka?

Sounds like you’ve had a really tough time @matthewthomas :(

Thank goodness for the crisis team.

Really hope the counselling comes through for you and helps you work through some of the challenges you are facing.

Glad you have made it through, and hope you find a way through the darkness. You matter, and there are people who care about you.

If you find things are getting too much, remember that you can always talk to the Samaritans on 116 123, 24 hours a day, who are ready to listen. The National mental health charity Mind also has resources that might help

Or for diabetes support and information you can call the DUK helpline during office hours when it reopens after the break.

I’m not sure how common green vomit would be. The only times I’ve had it we’re from food poisoning, when I was continuing to be sick even though my stomach was completely empty.

Hang in there. You can make it through this, and things can get better for you.

I think green or yellow vomit can be common in anything where you go on vomiting after the stomach is empty. And in DKA, your body is still giving signals that you need to get rid of something toxic, long after you've emptied your stomach. I used to get very car sick as a child, and can remember throwing up continuously on our annual trip to Devon, and it was always yellow bile after the first few times, when I'd got rid of everything in my stomach.
It has a really bitter taste, too, I always referred to it as 'Vile bile'

You’re very brave to tell your story @matthewthomas You’re obviously a very smart young person, and I really hope that you get the support you need. It’s not a weakness to need outside support. Many, many people do - people of all ages, from young to very old.

The important thing to remember is that whatever is getting you down can get better. Think of it like weather - days and days of greyness and rain, but that’s not permanent. It will pass and the sunshine will reappear. It’s hard to remember that when you look at at yet another dark, rainy day, but it’s true.

There’s a saying that says”Youth is wasted on the young”. I always thought it was a bit stupid tbh, but as I got older, I realised better what it’s trying to say. Life becomes more precious, more amazing as you get older. Your horizons broaden, you see the wonder of it all better.

You have a whole life ahead of you full of the most incredible possibilities. Will you visit the Great Barrier Reef? Will you live abroad for a while? Will you learn to windsurf? Become a designer? Become a rock star? Work in a local animal rescue centre? Fall in love? Be in a film? Be paid to play computer games? Work in tech? Make the most amazing friends? Who knows? There are endless possibilities, and they’re all yours. We can’t do everything but we can do lots of things that bring us happiness. All those years are yours to fill with what brings you joy, laughter, calmness.

When things are getting you down, it’s hard to see outside those things. Your life becomes quite small and it’s so hard to see past the things that are upsetting you. But the whole world is out there waiting for you. Look after yourself and always speak to someone if you need to.

As well as the links above, there are organisations like Young Minds:

You’re not alone - ever. You’re the only You in the whole world. You’re unique and you’re needed.
