hi my name is peter ii am 64, have post-polio, and a sweet tooth ! alas i had a Nissan fundoplication and the doctor encouraged me to eat chocolate as it helps empty the stomach..... arrrggghhh struggling to find sugar substitute have many things wrong with me but then that's me stubborn, should have rested when told,....

Hi @papagray and welcome to the forum.
While people think that high Blood Glucose is caused by sugar, it's actually all carbohydrates, starches as well which turn into glucose (some very quickly) after eating.
So you need to watch out for eating potatoes, bread, tropical fruit , drinking fruit juice and even whole grains (including porridge).
Personally I found it easier to slowly cut the sugar I cut bread and potatoes faster) until now the only sugar I take is natural sugars in berries and the little added sugar in packaged sauces I can't avoid. I do eat chocolate, but weaned myself off milk chocolate (going for darker and darker chocolate as my taste changed) until I now eat Lindt 90% which is 14gms of carbs per 100gm bar. So I could eat a whole bar without it affecting my BG too much.

I hope this helps.

Hi papagray, welcome to the forum.

It can be really challenging when we get such conflicting pieces of advice so I'm glad you've joined us and can make some informed decisions.

Finding alternatives can be tricky, I remember buying 6 different sugar substitutes when I was first diagnoses to test which went best with my tea! I don't recommend that and just ended up adjusting how I drink tea but just letting you know that you're not alone in the search!

I found it easier to keep a diary for a week of your meals and then look at how to make each meal more suitable for your blood sugar levels.

If we can help in any way, please do let us know and feel free to poke around for some more info.

hi have post-polio so struggle with health as it is,having bulbar type has affected my swallowing, recent test shows the oesophagus not functioning correctly, not pumping food down more like a full spasm alas not the worst, i am prone to uti as i have problems emptying the bladder so self catheterise to empty it only at bedtime now, alas my cure to prevent uti is to drink cranberry juice ! alas its full of sugar/carbs i am slowly becoming used to antibiotics, and the specialist did say about the oesophagus bad function he might operate if i am still here in 2 years time, even gp would not respond to that question how long do i have so does it really matter that i try to control diabetes ? alas no-one answers the difficult questions anymore, i am not unintelligent maybe a bit loopy or daft, but thats my nature. anyhow prob got wrong end of stick i hope but i know cancer is prolific for not getting acid out of oesophagus and i suffer with reflux...
