Im on novarapid and levimer, whats the diffrence with humalog and lantus, never been told, why do people when diagonsed get prescribed diffrent types of insulin
Thanks Scotty![]()
They all have slightly different qualities ..
Lantus is said to deal with DP very effectively
Levemir is said to be associated with less weight gain
Humalog is American and said to be the nearest thing to the body's own insulin
Novorapid is a product from European Union product, its prevalence in the UK might be down to that or a sweetheart deal between NHS/PCTs ?
Hopefully your med team consider which combination of these is best for you or has particularly good experience of using them.
Ironically none of the four products you mention are actually insulin - they are insulin analogues - manmade concoctions genetically engineered to have certain qualities and to play particular roles as a subsititute for insulin.
thanks for reply whats dp?
My consultant was asked this question when he was taking the DAFNE course I was on..
His answer
Personal preference based on his experience prescribing insulin over the years..
His example was Levimer and Lantus.. He prefers to start new patients off on Levimer because he has found even though Lantus is supposed to have the flatter profile, he has seen better results with Levimer..
A flat profile is all very well, but no use if your basal requirement is not flat (and I don't know ANY pumpers who stuck to a completely flat profile)
Levemir would have been my next move if I had not moved to a pump, at least it would have given the option of setting 2 different basal levels to match requirement (via 2 injections)
