hi all

I'm struggling with breakfast spikes, I'm pregnant and also suffering with extreme morning sickness so what I can stomach is also difficult. I used to eat berries and yoghurt which was great but I can't go near that at the min.

Burgen bread sent me from 5.6 to 13.0 yesterday (one slice toast). Cereals are shocking too and basically I'm struggling to come up with something else.

I'm not allowed more than 20g carb for breakfast to try and avoid spikes too.

Eggs are a no go - the idea makes me feel sick.

Ideas much appreciated.

Oh I feel for you, I had three pregnancies feeling sick for six months without having to deal with diabetes, and that was hard enough.
I love seed crackers and they are low in carbs whilst having more of a carb texture. Also how about soaking chia seeds in almond milk? Though imagine that could be like the yogurt and be a bit icky. Here is one recipe for seed crackers.

Good luck and I remember I had to change my diet every day as whatever I had just eaten could not be eaten the next day.

You have my sympathy, morning sickness is awful.
One tesco croissant is exactly 20g carbs.
Could you manage sausage and bacon?

Really difficult, how about forgetting about 'breakfast items' all together and having some left over dinner? What are you eating during the day that you like?

Avocado? x

I try not to have more than 20g at breakfast too, Grainger (cos I spike like nobody's business 1-1 and a half hours after injecting, then go low / hypo at 2-2 and a half hours:confused:).

So, I have:
100g full fat milk (5g carb)
33g raspberries (2.5g)
65g full fat Greek yogurt (2.5g)
35g blueberries (5g)
mixed nuts and seeds (about 5g)

The fat and the low-GI and the fibre are all an attempt to slow down digestion. I also mix a teaspoon of chia seeds with a small amount of water - after a few minutes they turn into a sort of seedy jelly 😱 which is intended to slow digestion too. I mix it with the nuts and seeds. AND I inject 20 mins before eating...mornings are a PAIN.🙄

Sorry to hear you're still suffering with morning sickness.:(

Hi Grainger, have you tried pre-bolusing? I find that my breakfast spikes are much reduced if I do this.

Hi all.

Thanks for ideas. I can do sausage or bacon so that will work for weekends but I don't really have time during the week (not organised enough!)

Pre-blousing I do approx 10 mins at the moment, I can't easily do anymore at the min as I'm trying to get food into me when I think I can keep it down so it's a bit of a balancing act.

Croissant was a great idea - tried that today and I had a rise but only 2.0 rise so that's an improvement 🙂

I did think of eating leftover dinner food but then looked at it this morning and my brain went - no way! Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

Keep the ideas coming please as who knows what I'll be able to stomach next week!

Just a thought: what did you have on the Burgen toast?

Just butter.

Weirdly had a slice today as couldn't face anything else and it worked perfectly. 5.6 before breakfast, 6.5 1 hour later.

Honestly I'm believing my body is just planning to do whatever it fancies right now!

I'm glad you were brave enough to try the Burgen again. So many times I see people deciding they won't allow themselves to eat certain foods because of one bad result, while your story goes to prove that random things happen sometimes!

I tend to have two boiled eggs & a slice or two of Warburtons Wholemeal toast, it's the smaller loaf I get (9g per slice)
& have butter on.
Will be about 20g of carbs in total

Eggs are good for protein & can help you feel fuller a bit longer than say a high carb cereal might.

Some days I have mushrooms / Bacon with all the fat trimmed off as I hate it
Some days maybe porridge (carbs will be more than 20g but slower released)
Some days a few large spoonfulls of the full fat greek youghut
Some days I don't feel like anything & as long as I don't feel weak, that's ok. Maybe then I would have a glass of milk

Thanks but I can't stomach eggs or yoghurt right now. Hopefully things will settle in a few weeks

One of the granddaughters is preg at the mo, and has all day sickness - so she grazes. From not being able to eat dairy she's gone the opposite this week and could eat cheese by the ton thought she's being sensible and having a couple of dry crackers with it at intervals. Her mother reckons she must be building bones right now and despite the throwing up it's allowing her to eat whatever it actually needs.

So all I can suggest is that you'll take advice from your body, grainger - just like we all did with T1 brewing when we constantly wanted to eat more sugar!

When I was on a low carb diet I would put a couple of sausages in the oven while I showered and dried my hair. Cooked and ready to eat once I was done

Pretty sure my body hates me but grazing does seem to be the key 🙂. Hope your granddaughter gets some relief from sickness soon. I'm 6 weeks into severe nausea now and praying second trimester this'll all stop. Consultants are lovely but there's nothing they can do to help. Meds don't work!

I like cold sausages, cook 'em the night before?

I know they don't though of course one was invented once that did.

I actually remember it - you won't but may have heard of it - Thalidomide !!!!!
