No it isnt dangerous it is the bodies way or using stored body fat for energy , like when you are fasting or on a diet, it is only dangerous if you are a diabetic without any circulating insulin then , when the ketones come out to play you get dka if no insulin is present. as a type 1 you have a supply of it readily available so i can forsee no problems , it is a natural bodily function.

Thanks guys, So if this is the case, I now don't understand why it is dangerous to be in "dietary ketosis" surely everyone has lost weight at some stage in their lives, just naturally... And some people need to lose weight, so why is it bad? how else are you supposed to lose weight?

there is also some evidence to suggest that a permanent state of dietary ketosis can put undue pressure on the liver, potentially creating future issues there.

Liver Damage

Dodger, in regards to another post in the 'low carb' thread, what you know about protein damaging your kidneys? As someone suggested...

Dear Katie,

It's some time since I did any research on this topic, but here's what I found.
The "bad for your kidneys" story is just that. It has been repeated so often that trained professionals believe it. It came about because people with preexisting liver disease have difficulty in dealing with protein. If you have a healthy liver there is no problem.

Regards Dodger

Thanks Dodger, I googled it and did read that there is only evidence of this with people who already have liver damage.

Not that i'll ever be in long term dietary ketosis personally!

Dear Mike,

Thanks for starting a new thread. However, from your post I now see that it is futile to debate the issue with you because no matter what I say I perceive that there is no way to change your viewpoint.

Dear Angeleyes,
What does "I get traces daily all by myself " mean?
Would you care to provide me with some evidence to back your statement about Atkins killing people?

Ok firstly what is your childhood tramua and will you please get over it!!!!!!
I get ketones traces daily because I am in pain daily, it pushes my sugars up and as I have Ulcerative Colitis I am always in pain and inflamed so get them all by myself!!!
And a Rachel Huskey died from the Atkins diet in 2000, she was one of the first to die doing the diet so please try to be a little less rude http://www.atkinsdietalert.org/survivors/rachel_huskey.html
I wouldn't have stated it if i didn't know it for a fact OK!!!!

Quote from C*5_Dodger

Dear Adrienne,
Your post tells me one of two things
1. You have never read Atkins or
2. You have and didn't understand it.

Atkins has four phases it only during the first (Induction) that 20gms of carbs is used. After that carbs are gradually increased. The long term objective of Atkins is to consume sufficient carbs so that you neither gain or lose weight i.e. you maintain a stable target weight. The final level of carbs is usually much more than 20gms.

Umm sorry but how bloody rude are you? You have managed to insult a handful of people with on fell swoop. Congratulations. This is supposed to be a friendly, supportive forum. Yes there will be disagreements, we all have our own points of view but there are ways and means of putting these across. Not sure what gives you the right to be holier than the rest of us.....

I did in fact do the Aitkins diet twice and I have the book at home. Phase 1 is 20 g of carbs. Phase 2 is called ongoing weight loss and there is a sliding scale as to how much weight you lost. According to the weight I lost I could only continue on 20 g of carbs, this is what I wrote in my message and it was fact. I stopped the diet as I personally need more than 20 g of carbs per day and I am rubbish at dieting. I never spoke about a final level of carbs because I never reached that far.

I understand why Mike is slightly peeved and has decided not to post. It is this sort of rudeness that can get people upset and angry which also affects the blood sugars.

A good healthy debate is great, I love them myself but I am never rude as you have succeeded to be. I would never post anything unless I knew what I was talking about and those that know me hopefully believe that. I have taken great offence as your message and I am angry rather than upset !

I agree with you Adrienne, I am b****y fuming actually because as I stated 'They had to change the Atkins Diet because someone died' I did not say anyone who does it will die! I tried it when it first came out and I heard about the girl who died so gave it up and at that time I wasn't diabetic so I didn't just say it for the sake of talking c**p 😡

I agree Adrienne this is a support forum and I personally love a good debate , as for people leaving ? I dont think that will happen somehow. The trouble at the moment is that people are giving out veiled insults / negative comments and then when they get feedback they dont like it and say they are leaving . I have had numerous digs and comments about my choice to minimal carb , right down to basically telling me that if i got off my ar** i could eat carbs !! i actually do over 2 hours of aerobics daily plus other stuff so i am far from lazy !! i have always said that it is an individual choice and not suitable for everyone and as you will see if you visit the low/ no carb thread i am always polite and except ALL views even if they are not to my thinking . The point i am making is , if you kick us enough times expect us to kick back on occasion .

I personally think it's great you don't eat carbs and you know I am trying to cut back because of my UC but that doesn't give Dodger the right to be so rude and arrogant to others

Just thought i'd add my bit 🙂 My nurse told me to do the atkins diet! i don't know what Ketosis is but think i've heard my friend who was on Lighter Life mention it, is it when you don't eat solid food for a few days and you body no longer asks for it? maybe i'm totally wrong with that though!

yes I know that Allison and you have only ever supported me !!! I agree that rudeness is not necessary . In fairness though we have been on the recieving end of it rather a lot recently!! but alas two wrongs dont make a right .

I get what you mean with this one AM. Ive always been a very active person (before the last few months when i was working on my final year dissertation/upset about stuff), but I have still struggled with getting those perfect levels that some people seem to get. I have either been going to karate, fencing, swimming, gym or running and now I do an hour's exercise video most days. It cannot simply be down to exercise. I would run around all day if I thought it would give me a perfect HbA1c! I am not scared of exercise. So the suggestion that this is the answer is a bit insulting! I have know doubt that exercise helps though.

Lighter Life is a whole other ball game. Being in ketosis does not mean not eating solids for weeks etc. Being in ketosis means your body is producing ketones which come from the beta cells in your pancreas I believe. Someone else will have to help with this as I have never studied this bit as my daughter does not and can not get ketones (no pancreas).

Lighter Life is a meal replacement and you have only approx 450 calories per day (no carbs at all). You have three soups or shakes and you have to drink over 4 litres of water a day (or is it 2 I can't remember). You get carb withdrawals for a few days, bad bad headaches and my hands shook. This is extreme dieting and the whole group experienced this but it didn't last long. I lost 4 stone in 4 months. My brain could not keep up and I still thought I was fat. I still needed to lose another 2 stone but I cheated once and once you cheat you hit that slipperly path ! I stopped and put on 6 stone !!!!! I still have all that weight to lose plus the 2 stone now. I had to test my urine for ketones every week and they are the same ketone sticks you would use, I needed to be the second or third square along. These diets work for some people but not all. My friend has just done it and completed it and looks great and so far so good its staying off. This is not a diet that a person with diabetes could do in my opinion and I doubt whether they would let you either actually. Your doctor has to give you a medical first off.

Oh no i would never do this diet, just wondered if it was the same word.

Hi Julie

Don't worry I didn't think you did want to do it. I just thought I would explain it in regard to ketosis. I was very confused when I was told I needed to be in ketosis. (1) I don't have diabetes so didn't even know I could get in ketosis and (2) I only knew that ketones were dangerous because I had only ever heard of them in relation to my friends kids being in DKA and stuff like that. So I had my eyes opened for me 🙂

Dear angeleyes,

I don't understand how/why you say I am rude and arrogant - please be more specific. It is not my intention to be rude, help me to understand what I have done.

Regards Dodger
