Hello my partner has diet managed type 2 DM. This needs regular blood glucose monitoring at least twice daily, fasting and PP. Our GP practice has refused to issue test strips quoting 'It is the local CCG policy not to issue test strips to those type 2 DM who are managed with diet alone' Is this happening elsewhere?

Type twos do not get strips prescribed, we are told is NHS policy, and there are regular reports of type twos being instructed not to test.

Yes it is common.
I used get them as I was on a drug called Gliclazide that can cause hypoglycemia, but I am no longer on that , so had then taken off my repeat list.

Around here, it's self testing is dismissed out of hand, with no reference to CCG or polices. And this does appears to be the way HCP go generally.

I was told not to bother testing. I do test though and no I cannot get test strips prescribed.

Unfortunately this is all too common. The national NICE guidance for T2 doesn‘t recommend self monitoring unless T2s take medicines that might cause hypos.

It‘s very frustrating, and there’s a long story about trial evidence and trial structures, but the short version is that the practical application of BG results to tailor an individualised moderate-low carb eating plan hasn‘t been repeated in a large-scale trial.

If you need to self fund, then choosing the right meter can have a significant effect on the cost. The most affordable meters members here have found are the SD Gluco Navii or the Spirit Tee2 which both have test strips at around £8 for 50

I have read that phoning Spirit Healthcare about the Tee 2 might get you a free meter if you order several hundred strips.
It is the meter I use and it seems fine so far - and easy enough to set up and use.
